RSS widget showdown

RSS is huge! No doubt. So RSS widgets are huge as well. It’s not the size, it’s the popularity. I have decided to compare a few RSS widgets to give you an idea of which one you should use. Remember most of this post is an opinion. You ultimately need to decide for your self.

So far I have seen three four of RSS widget (allways correct me if I am wrong)

1. Widget that displays only one RSS feed. Size of widget, number of posts listed, animation and sometimes color/border customizations are available. This, I believe, is the “standard RSS widget”

    2. Feedo displays only one RSS feed but allows the reader to change RSS feeds during their visit. All customizations listed above as well as themes, post size control, and a host of other settings. This one also allows for animation or not.

    3. Grazr displays multiple RSS feeds in a user defined format. That means you can select how it shows the posts. Single pane or three pane. The three pane shows the feeds in the first pane. The second pane shows title/headlines for the posts. The third pane then shows the actual text of the post. Grazr has the unique ability to play Podcasts right from the widget. This put it near the top when considering RSS widgets

    4. Google reader “clips”.(You’ll need a Google reader acct.) This widget will display posts from multiple RSS feeds. You decide which posts get displayed. There are not very many options for this widget. You have seven color options or choose plain text. You decide how many posts to display and wether you want the post source displayed or not. Also the title of the widget can be changed. (to find widget in Google reader…share a post then view “shared items” you’ll see it)
One other thing I forgot to mention. Once the widget is on your blog you can update it from your Google reader account. This is the coolest feature. It allows you to deliver new and relevant content to your blog with a few clicks and chances are your readers and you are interested in the same things. Everybody wins.

Again the ultimate decision is yours.

I like Grazr for alot of reasons but they don’t add up to the ease of use I find with Google reader clip. Maybe I’ll add both of them to this page.
