Cellblock adds Desktop Drag & Drop Widget

by Derek Anderson Stumble this! February 26th 2007

Some excellent news From Justin at CellBlock.com

Very fitting for post #200

Cellblock has just posted a breakthrough release, extending the scope of
its real-time, collaborative photo and video blogging widget to the
desktop space.

With just a few clicks, anyone can download a cellblock to their desktop
for viewing or to upload content. To upload content, someone simply drags
& drops photos and videos from their desktop onto the desktop widget and
it instantly updates, everywhere – on every desktop and on every website
it’s embedded.

Anyone can attach these Cellblock Desktop Widgets to emails – meaning you
can now have a single 150K attachment that displays an unlimited amount of
photo and video content, streamed in real-time from cellblock.com. This
attachment acts as a dynamic content container, that is instantly
updatable and never out of synch, no matter where it is being viewed or
when it was downloaded.

The applications for this are staggering. You could imagine a company
party, where everyone is taking photos and videos with their cell phones
or digital cameras. After the party, someone sends a cellblock around, as
an attachment on the company mailing list. Employees simply double click
on the attachment (opening it on their desktop), then they drag and drop
their photos and videos into it and the entire company can see them,
instantly.

This is a truly revolutionary concept and technology.

Additionally, Cellblock has extended its content controls, adding Email
Whitelists and New Content Notification. File size limits have been
increased to 10MB for both photo and video content, making it extremely
easy to post digital camera photos from the desktop space. We take care
of all the resizing for you, so you simply drag & drop the content and
that’s it.

To give this revolutionary new technology a spin, please visit:

cellblock.com

As before, Cellblock is a free service and the storage space is unlimited.

Sincerely,
Justin Blemly

* Cellblock Desktop Widgets only supported for Windows users, presently

“The technology we’ve developed, code-named Dokodemo, affirms the
post-browser widget era by erasing browser/desktop distinctions. A
traditional uploading implementation requires a user to download and
install separate desktop software for uploading content to their web-sited
album or widget. With Dokodemo, the widget encapsulates all end-use
functionality whether it is on a desktop or in a website.”

Harper Collins Browse inside widget

by Derek Anderson Stumble this! February 26th 2007

Publisher Harper Collins is embracing widgets with their new “Browse Inside” widget.

This allows bloggers to let their readers have a look inside their favorite books.

If the book you are fond of has this capability…look for the embed code in the upper right of the books page on Harper Collins

It also appears as though they want it to become viral. Check out the “get this for your site” link at the bottom of the widget.

NY Times thru Flickr in Grazr

by Derek Anderson Stumble this! February 23rd 2007

Using Yahoo Pipes Daniel Raffel has created a very popular pipe the takes keywords from the front page of the NY Times and then searches Flickr for a photo that is tagged with that keyword. Pipes then provides you a RSS feed for the results.
I put the feed into Grazr.

Now we have a nice little custom widget.

When did widgets quit being fun?

by Derek Anderson Stumble this! February 22nd 2007

I remember when “widgets” were simply things that you could add to your blog. Extras or add-ons. A little something to add some color or simple functionality to your plain, text only side bar. It was a time, when, if you found something, a widget, on some obscure blog, it was exciting. You actually had to hunt it down a bit. Put in some effort. It was fun.

Now it seems as though… if the year of the widget doesn’t happen…it’ll be the end of the world. Oh and by the way…if you don’t make any money with your widget thingy your a failure as well.

WTF…does everything have to have a business model?

Widgets are Profitable!

If it gets people to recognize your brand…it’s profitable!
If it gets people to visit your site…it’s profitable.
If it makes others want to have one…it’s profitable.

If it makes businesses want to hire you to create a widget for them…Now you have a business model.

Let the work sell itself.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t work much for widgets. Today…widget A. Tomorrow…widget B replaces widget A. …and so on and so on.

Widgets quit being fun as soon as they became business!

Appear to be someone else on MyBlogLog

by Derek Anderson Stumble this! February 21st 2007

Shoemoney has the scoop

I understand that you simply edit your MBL cookie to appear as another MBL user.

What good or harm this does is beyond me. But whatever.

I kinda like MBL. I see copycats every week trying to take a chunk out of MBL.

I suppose now that Yahoo bought them it’s now Ok to exploit, hack and whatever else thats been going on.

Typical!

Yahoo pipes–What can you do with it?

by Derek Anderson Stumble this! February 20th 2007

mbldel.jpg

Did you know that you can create a widget that combines your MyBlogVisitors with their del.icio.us tags?

Then you can simply add it to your side bar.

badge-widget.jpg

How about creating a badge from any RSS feed?

If creating widgets interests you… Head over to Brewster’s Field guide (kentbrewster.com) for information on how to create these widgets and also how to start creating your own widgets.

blogarate.com rating widget + visitor widget wHooiz.com

by Derek Anderson Stumble this! February 19th 2007

blogkarate.jpg

blogarate.com together with whooiz.com have created a what? …an Avatar visitor tracking community profile site (MyBlogLog) and paired it with a rate my post/site.

This is great! Hopefully I am allowed to see and track whoever is giving me poor ratings.

whooiz.jpg

I sure hope that they allow video uploading soon. I know that you can upload podcasts on your whooiz profile as well as use a naked woman for an avatar.

whooiz2.jpg

One thing I did notice about the rate widget…it’s more of a “plug in”.

I couldn’t just add it to my template. I would actually have to break out the FTP program and add it to the files on the server.
So I think this alone puts it head and shoulders above the average user.

The blogarate and wHooiz sites are well put together and easy to navigate. I would say that if you are looking for a change from MBL you will probably feel right at home here.
