Clearspring.com gets invested

Clearspring.com will custom build widgets for you…for a fee. Clearspring.com just raised $5,500,000.00 to help promote what they do.

Here are some other takes on the story.

Clearspring does not offer a widget gallery or platform of its own,
depending on widgetized distribution on its customers’ sites, such as
NBA.com

Mashable
Clearspring, the widget
platform we previewed back in November 2006, has raised funding from
prominent investors: AOL founders Steve Case and Ted Leonsis. The pair
joined a $5.5 million second round investment in the company, which
offers a Feedburner-like service.

Red Herring
The
startup plans to use the funding to build up its staff as it syndicates
so-called widgets, or miniature web applications, for customers such as
the NBA, the Indianapolis Colts, Universal Pictures, and slide show
startup RockYou.

Read / Write Web
In a recent post, VC Brad Feld
says
there are 23 “widget management systems” and he suggests that most of them are
heading for a disappointing end. He also notes that many existing web services companies
are ‘widgetizing’ their services:
