One of the thing i always had envy from wordpress, was Askimet, and when one does think in Automattic, one does think up in Askimet after thinking in Wordpress of course, but they do more than that.
They also produce bbPress, a forum software but what it needs to be known is more about the plugins they produce and more important the Widgets they produce and tools you can use to improve your widget use in wordpress.
