Plusmo.com has been a mobile widget leader since June 2006. They have been averaging 10 million mobile page views monthly. On July 31st they announced the ability to utilize the Plusmo service on iPhones. This is a smart move considering the insane popularity of the Apple line.

iPhone users now have access to over 20,000 widgets created mainly by Plusmo users. This is a free service that allows you to simply pick the widgets that you want to use either through your mobile browser or via your computer. Then you download the Plusmo client to your mobile device (iPhone) and start enjoying your favorite, easy to use features that you choose.

When I navigate to the Plusmo for iPhone page, I am prompted to ‘Publish’ which allows me to either add a Plusmo button to my blog, create a mash-up widget or add an iPhone widget to the Plusmo interface. (maybe later)

Get Started
The option that we are interested in at this point is the ‘Get Started’ button. This is where you start picking the mobile widgets you want to use. You are presented a list of widgets based upon your location. I don’t understand this once I look at the widgets that were picked. The only two that pertain are ‘Local Traffic’ and ‘Local News’. Other widgets in the list must be default settings. Google search, Pop Sugar and ESPN Sports just to name a few.

Tons of Widgets!
There are widgets that show you the nearest Starbucks and Pizza Hut locations based upon a zip code search. Widgets that show you Google news and Yahoo! sports. You can keep up with celeb gossip on Perez Hilton. The list is nearly endless at 20,000 to choose from. Most people will never make it through the entire list before getting bored or being seriously late for work.

Whats next?
I think iPhones are cool. However, the iPhone is a first generation device. I am waiting to see what is around the corner for more affordable technology. The service agreements with the various carriers will need work as well. But the future looks really brite for these type of mobile devices and the applications (widgets) that are created for use with them.
