Apple iTunes releases My iTunes web widgets

Apple today released a series of web widgets that display your iTunes favorites, reviews and recent purchases. They are called simply ‘My iTunes Widgets’.
These widgets come from a company that likes to keep things to themselves. Surprisingly these widgets are not stuck in the Apple Dashboard but actually can make it onto a persons blog. In keeping with Apple standards the widgets did not appear until mid way through the third quarter of the “Year of the Widget”.
Easy to set up
The widgets are dead simple to set up. Simply log into your user account on the My iTunes widget page. Then select the type of widget you want to display. Purchases, Reviews or Favorites. Then choose the color (5 choices) and then choose your width (3 choices). You will also need to click ‘Enable MyiTunes’ in your iTunes Store to make this widget work.
This is a Flash widget making it MySpace friendly. However, how much fun is a widget where none of the features work because the links are rendered inoperable? Thanks MySpace!
My opinion
I am not a big fan of widget developers that limit your choices to what they figure is good. You the user should have complete control over the appearance and size of any widget as I indicated in “Elements of a winning widget”
Another issue I have here is the fact that you cannot listen to even a snippet of music in any of these widgets. This takes a lot of fun out of it right there.
My opinion aside… it is a good effort that is sure to be a huge hit. Millions of people use iTunes and millions of people blog.
Therefore this is a sure fire widget.
