The Ivoon.com iPod for MySpace widget

August 13th, 2007 by Derek Anderson Leave a reply »

Ivoon.com has created a great mp3 playing iPod styled widget. It is very realistic in appearance and the buttons do work. the menu button brings up a visual of the EQ and the ability to alter the volume and pick any spot in the current song. I would like to see more options though. I want to be able to disable auto-play. (I found the setting) Some people like to choose whether or not to listen to your choice of music.

What makes it work?
This widget uses Flash programming to make it MySpace friendly. There is brief registration required but no email verification is needed. Once they get an email address and a username and password you can enter the site and start choosing music to add to your playlist. the music gallery has over 500 songs listed from a wide variety of artists and genres.

But I want my music.
Excellent! and you can do just that. Ivoon.com allows you to upload the mp3s you want for your playlist.

There are many, many MySpace friendly mp3 players out there and most of them are kinda crappy. Ivoon has created a real nice, good sounding, attractive, iPod styled player. I suggest getting your own today.

Using an Apple-owned image of an iPod as your UI is still copyright infringment, and even if they ivoon creates their own picture (which clearly they haven’t), there are still trade dress issues. It’ll be interesting to see how long ivoon is allowed to get away with it before Apple legal steps in.

I have seen other ipod players on the net, i really do not see that being a problem, i think apple has bigger things to worry about

yea to name a few dizzler.com, myflashfetish and others have ipod players and are bigger sites so i see no problem.

Thank you for all your comments, in this very case the representation of a known brand is a non issue given the service is free. it fall in edge of legal ambiguity, the only way Apple would have a case to follow is if the service was not free, or the brand a resemblance of the brand would be used to push revenue directly.

On the question of how many have used a Ipod as the skin of the player in a widget?, over a dozen. even Blogmusic.net used a player very alike to Ivoon before their 2.0 release.
