Fricken widgets keep disappearing

by Derek Anderson Stumble this! September 08th 2007

Where’d they go?

My damn widgets keep disappearing. I think visitors are taking them…or something else happens to them. It seems as though when the page is loading, it takes forever. Like it’s looking for the missing widget. Yes I know it looks as though the widget is there but I think it’s missing, it just doesn’t know it yet.

Why is it missing?
Because, if it hangs too long, too many times I place it on the chopping block. The ‘PollDaddy’ widget is one of those widgets that consistently slows down the complete load of the site. I want it to load fast…not hang around for some one else’s stupid generic server to get off the server toilet and deliver what the readers browser is demanding.

The word ‘Fuck’ has entered the conversation.
If you plan on creating a widget that millions of people will want. The least you can Fuck-N do is set up the infrastructure to support the damn thing.
What The Fuck?

Last night I created the Vanessa Hudgens widget through YourMinis. Some Disney star that went and got naked in front of a camera (nice boobies) The widget simply displays a ‘Vanessa Hudgens’ feed from Google blog search. No images or videos, just 10 simple headlines linked to their respective stories.

The image of a widget
Maybe I need to consider eliminating widgets in posts all together. Just images of what the widget looks like will be sufficient. Heck I may even need to drop them from the sidebar.
Imagine a widget blog without any widgets…wonder what that would be like? Probably like Coke without the fizz or maybe dinner without the food.

My opinion
Widget makers need to figure out how to generate direct income from these widgets. Whether they charge for use or sell ad space on the widget. It needs to be done! If not, the publishers will eventually revolt and your widget will be dead.

  1. I guess is related to what Lawrence at Sexy Widget wrote some days ago: http://www.sexywidget.com/my_weblog/2007/08/you-know-you-wr.html

Derek, I agree with you, we (widget developers) need good servers to host our widgets but distributors need to do their bit as well. Check out my view on this post (inspired from your post)

    Salut!

  2. Ernesto,
Thank you for your support on this topic. It will be very interesting to see what happens in the future as this problem progresses. Also, thank you for linking to WidgetsLab in your post. I will be linking your blog in the ‘Widget Links’ on my sidebar.

  3. [...] But there are places where widgets from different context code live, some profiles in myspace, some blogs in blogger, some in wordpress that not only turned the blog unusable but in to a death note to anyone who dares to visit sending more errors to the browser than a hacker virus breach, and what is worse sometimes it is not even the fault of the profle owner, sometimes are old profile running some outdated widget or widget that were neglected by their creators. this complements very well what derek stated in his latest rant from my point of view here. but there is even more, take for instance Randy morin take on the matter where the problems start from the platform itself along with the widget provider: [...]
