As cool as Vista Sidebar widgets are, i always thought they lacked power, they lacked the ability to be true lightweight applications at the reach of a click or the hover of a cursor and not just display launchers. but that days are over since Silverlight 1.0 is finally out, that means everything can benefit from a serious power-up that can sport the looks and act up to the task. and AOL Social Mail Silverlight Gadget has quite the honor of being the first "official" Silverlight gadget not developed by MS or Ms partners and completely out in the open and ready to use by everyone.
You can expect this widget to behave pretty much like a application that sits in your Vista Sidebar. right now Aol site offers you the two skins depicted above and soon it will allow you to design your own and customize your experience with it too.
The focus of the widget is to show your A-list Emails (most read, most frequent) and be able to see photos, videos and listening to audio embed in them without having to use your browser as all widgets should be from now on, not only a display but a Rich display.
So, give it a chance if you are using AOL or AIM e-mail and take it for spin. i can personally say that it works very well, and there is also the thought that this was developed even before Silverlight 1.0 got out, so imagine what you can expect from later Silverlight gadgets and web widgets?
