Scratchback TopSpot Widget: Link sharing listings meets community text link ads

by Avatar Stumble this! November 12th 2007

Scratchback is a new service offered in widget form that is catching on a lot of buzz recently and that shares something in common with controversial services like Widgetbucks or blogrush: that is trying something old in a new pushing boundaries move or angle.

The concept of Scratchback meets up in a point where it proposes what the Criteo widget does. what a Text-Links Ad stripe does and  make you money in the same way a Paypal Donate badge does while being neither in the sense that it is just the starting point from what the service ambitions are.

Weird explanation, but bear with me.

The deal is that you create a account with scratchback, create and place this widget in your blog where your readers can tip you like they would do so with a paypal badge and then you display links in return, then they plan to set up a affiliate program to make it more fluid and if you are a advertiser you got a community to choose from where to put your links and if you still desire more yo can get a special custom design f your widgets so it carries your brand and blends with your site design..

It is clever i must add, it is not unethical like other programs and it seems to be starting nice evn if slow but i got a problems with it.

Where other widget startups are all execution and style and no biz model to support the service, scratchback is all biz model without a really thought out execution and style..

the service looks generic, the functions and the base of the community are disperse and what is more important in a widget based start up, is that the widget should stand out, should be good and should be pretty.. and unfortunately the widget is none of those things yet, it is very generic, the design is bland and it got no style.. every time i look at it i think in a walmart coupon or a deal of the day flyer.. and that is not a good thing.

Paid customized looks should be about the branding, make the users pay for the branding but not make them also paid for the whole look and customization options. something that should be provided from the start.

Now, if they but they act together, it got a pretty real good chance of working and surpass other widgets in the monetization area.

  1. Yes, but does it help you monetize your blog and engage your readers by allowing them to “give back” to you? Yes… it does :)

You’ll never know unless you try it. :)
