Widget Developments From CES 2008

Yes you read that title right, widget developments from CES, because given how popularwidgets are now it is not surprise that they are getting their way into products as one of the main features or the main feature from a product. as i noted, this is something i expect to happen enough in 2008 to be worth of some notes.
1.-Widgets in a frame
something that can be attributed to Chumby . having widgets in a frame is something that at first sounds weird and even may sound weird but, it is not, it is a great idea.
Simply because suddenly depending on the capacities of the frame you can not only stream photos from the cloud so all the family can enjoy them but you can send messages from a phone as alerts, have a weather widget display from time to time, and even convert that frame into several appliances on demand ( a clock, a alarm clock, calculator, answer machine, etc) all thanks to the fact that your frame will not need to be a pc, just a terminal where the info is sent and consumed, and the interface for that information should be widgets.
the first step in this direction besides chumby is
D-Link debuts DSM-210 10-inch WiFi photo frame
2.-A fully featured Widget Station ( a widget terminal)
a Extension of the same use our first case but only extended to a more dedicated use.
Once again this widget station is just a terminal for information and apps serves from the cloud just that this time around you may need lots of them to be on demand at all time and maybe several of them running at the same time.
Why not a computer or just a more powerfull frame?: cost and use.
we are getting to a point when online devices are once again determined by use, in what is called Post- pc devices.and as such device, it should be separated from the common thinking that goes behind a PC too, so you got info and task apps running at all time served from the cloud where they evolve and the computing happens without you having to do nothing but to use and manipulate the information.
and all that thinking can be seen in the second attempt to create such widgetstation in

3.-Widgets as part of the main applications in a Mobile Phone
We saw the start of this in 2007 with the arrival of the iphone and we will see it reach mainstream this year once the SDK of the iphone is out, and sponsored services in several Windows Mobile providers push it forward pre-installed.
Third parties is where most of the action used to happen and it will still present the most evolved versions of what a mobile widget is and can do with the evolution of yahoo goo and the soon to be out Opera Mobile 9 to come out with the same widget engine that everyone knows from the desktop.
but those are not the main options or what we are talking about, we are talking about widgets serving as applications from the first time you get your phone not as an afterthought but as a part of the design and the common features in a mobile phone.
A simple example of this can be found in
Wistron NeWeb’s GW4 Linux phone
and there you have it, less than a month in and this is where we are at. so i look forward to what the est of the year will surely bring.
