Netvibes is the best Startpage i have used, even if it lacks the brand power of any of the Big 3 it sure don´t lacks features or a powerful unified system. the netvibes team gloats of having a good platform and they are right, they have a system as good as any of the main players, but i guess that was no longer good enough for them.
They wanted to have the best and the next release of Netvibes, still codenamed “Ginger” certainly is. it unifies all the developments Netvibes worked hard for lastyear: new metrics, new layouts, their Universal Widget API and their ecosystem.
The next netvibes is the best prospect for future Start pages and also the current ones.
I would even dare to say that it blurs the line of being a Startpage and a Webtop, and that may be the next step they could take with Netvibes later on. even if it is as a separated product. i do that analogy because they have hinted to get into the Social Graph idea bandwagon and make Ginger not only your Startpag but also a social and personal aggregator too. so that is why such claims seems relevant and valid for me to make.
Netvibes has started to shift the most active and oldest users into the new netvibes release by offering that upgrade. along handling out invitations on websites and even randomly so that indicates me they are now in the final phases of testing before releasing it.
