BlogCatalog Aggregated Lifestream News Feed Widget

BlogCatalog has been around for some time now, it started as a simple Blog Directory and later on when MyBlogLog jumped from being just a blog visitors tracking service to be something out of its own, BlogCatalog did its best to follow that trend with their own recent visitors widget while it continued to doing its own thing.

Now i can finally say that BlogCatalog has matched the most important aspects of their competitors while remaining a good blog directory and also have reached a point where there are enough active blogs in their directory to make their service attractive enough.

Just around two weeks ago MyBlogLog introduced Lifestream Aggregation to their site, but one of the things they didn`t provided was a widget for it, not yet at least.

BlogCatalog must have seen as a good opportunity to offer something their main competition didn`t and get to do it first and i guess that is where this idea for this widget came from.

They did good because that was precisely one of the things i wondered about when MyBlogLog launched their feature. where is the widget for this?. but fortunately for all MyBlogLog competitors, they are not really fast to react or implement their own system updates.

The Widget is simple and as you can see it looks good enough and comes with a selection of colors, you can put it in your blog and enjoy even more residual traffic thanks to it, but the whole point behind the widget is to have a portable version of your BlogCatalog lifestream.

*Update*

I just edited some niggles in the post and as Antony Berkman from BlogCatalog let me know in a quite candid comment i forgot about a feature in this widget:

“We also added RSS subscription to the widget so subscribers to your social stream via are notified via their reader anytime you Digg an article, Stumble one, or send out a Tweet. The potential for a member’s posts to go viral has dramatically increased as their social activities, such as diggs, automatically get distributed to all their social lifestream subscribers, displays in the newsfeed of anyone who is following them on blogcatalog, as well as on the widget itself.”

I do agree with his points so what better than to pass on his comments directly into the post?. so there you go, now is up to just give it a try.

  1. Thank you for your terrific widget review. You are dead on with timing of the widget. It does provide for another valuable feature that differentiates us from yahoo’s mbl.

The challenge with so much data from social networks is finding a tight, elegant way to package a bloggers social activity and provide our members with control of their social activity map.

This widget does both. I think it’s elegant and it provides our member’s the tools to display and share as little or as much of their social network activity, as they like, with their readers right from their blog.

If you install the widget, please provide us with any of your thoughts on it so that we can continue to improve it.
