American Idol is an extremely popular show in the US. It is currently in it’s seventh season towards the end where the champion is decided.

I’m not a big fan of the show in it’s entirety. I more favor the early stages where viewers get to see the selection process and view some of the idiots that actually think they can sing. These people are absolutely hilarious!

The widget:
There is now an American Idol widget for your blog, social networking profile or website. The widget was created using the powerful tools from springwidgets.com.
As you can see in the screenshot, there are multiple tabs that allow access to various things like videos, pictures and Idol news. One thing I noticed right away, no ability to cycle through the pictures in the widget. The image you see on the front of the widget acts as a link to the American Idol website. If I wanted to go there I would click the link located under the image that says “View more photos” …duh!

Also found out there is no information displayed in the “Hot Boards” sub tab found in the “community” section of the widget. This might not bother many people, but I like to see complete functionality in web apps such as this.

This widget basically acts as a giant collection of links to the American Idol website. The only real widget style functionality that I found, would be the countdown timer at the bottom of the widget that tells you when the next episode will be on.

I don’t believe the shortcomings in the American Idol widget have any reflection on the power of springwidgets as a widget developer tool. Simply take a look at the options presented to you when you decide to add the widget to your…pick one.
