Something that i wanted to post last week when it was revealed to the surprise of no one that facebook most popular apps where the ones that where “just for fun”.
Just Remember that most of those apps are what can be considered as Widget-Apps.
No surprise because the kings of widgets (slide and rockyou) are also the kings of facebook Application Platform.
just a little note there. and no. i am not saying that mindless apps or widget-apps are a good thing. but that is how things go. it happened with MySpace in 2006 and what do you know, it happened for Facebook in late 2007 and most of 2008. until they redesign the profiles and update facebook later this year i bet..
Why are these apps, the popular ones?
That is a question i think holly liu answes very well:
5 Reasons Why Useless Apps are So Popular
Most of her answer can also apply to widgets in general for the most part.
*Update*
Heh, i gues i was right, just it will get to happen a lot sooner that i thought. and for those asking why Facebook would try to shun Developers from cluttering the platform.. please.. the recent trends in the last 3 months show a facebook decreasing its reach every month because of this convoluted cluttering.
for me it is logical that the way for facebook to reach more people and maintain control is to release a better open web presence by making a simplified version of the old (the one still in use) profile the open to web land page in the same way myspace does. just by doing that they would have Google under control, the wallen garden intact but would seem like a more logical service to use. LinkedIn pretty much did that last year in a way and just by looking the stats on their growth for the last year it shows them growing at a rate of over 100% per month…
More on this later when the new profiles lands. and i by the way think is the right way to go and am eager for them.
