YouTube tests Video Overlays, starts with annotations.

YouTube is now testing a new in-video overlays for content creators via TestTube that is for YouTube what Draft is for Blogger. These new overlays are now being used as a way to add Annotations. it is a interesting progression for the YouTube service but it is likely that it will take a social angle when released. i for one hope not because i bet that this new feature will be used wrong by 90% of the YouTube community. but, it is hard to stop progress i guess.
But for the 10% of rightly used videos. it will be very interesting to see how this progreses and adds interactivity to YouTube by providing infonotes, and internal linking for interactive videos.
A good example of that is the Interactive Card Trick video.
Given the way it is being used. this is a service only usable in the main site and it don`t affects embeddables.
I only wish this means such a feature will be able to be used for true gain in the case of content creator or big uploaders and a way to add external links in-video or add subtitles sequences is coming up next. that would be the true progress for online video if it comes from the almost monolithic player YouTube is in that market.

the overlays are cheap and annoying and only giving Us the “consumer” the right to ad in things in the same fashion that THEY already are ad-ing advertising to the video.
