I sense a new post of Google Gadget Strategy to come as matter to update the wave of updates Google has done in this space. their latest is to Aim for Linux Users.
And the way to Aim and hit Linux Users is shoot them with Open Source projects. and that is exactly what Google is doing. they are Open Sourcing Google Gadget for Linux.
The vessel is of course a new iteration of Google Desktop for Linux that brings a better support for Google Gadgets and also the Linux Project to allow them modify, port and redistribute them.
While all this may look as the nicest of moves in Google part. it is not. it is a way to extend Google reach in the Widget market and consolidate Google as the ultimate desktop widget brand in the process.
Other good reason is to mine on the work of the Linux community and port back to Windows and Mac whatever truly good Google Gadgets come from this.
The final reason is to make Google Gadgets a spring board for simple and portable apps because in linux they are extending the power of the gadgets and the range of things these can become. who can say these apps will not end up in Android or as part of a future Google Initiative?
That is right. you can`t. and they say only Microsoft would come up with such a scheme as they have for their own ecosystem down the line.
That don`t makes this plan less brilliant, so it is time to watch even closer into Google Gadgets.
A funny thought is that this pretty much consolidates the notion of the Vista Gadget Sidebar as the way to go don`t it?
