Google Media Server Gadget is geared to be used in Google Desktop is a quite interesting proposal in terms of widgets. a sort of Media Extender for Google backed online media and your files running in a computer with Google Desktop.

This Google Gadget is Windows only for now and while it support UPnP enabled devices and these can go from photo frames to set top box and other small devices. the experience will be sub par on these because they don`t have the power to offer you a good enough experience. that is why there are so many media extenders in the market solely for that mean. the best non dedicated media extender for Windows is without a doubt the Xbox360 but this is not supported officially, neither is the Wii. but there are workarounds to make the Google Media Server Gadget to work in them. something that will of course will elude 90% of users. the only suggested and called as a example where you can use Google Media Server is in the PS3 . another thing is that it would be the only device where it would make sense to have this one in the first place since Xbox 360 communicates perfectly with WMP 11 and directly in the case of Vista Media Center enabled PC`s. the Wii got a Browser so why would you need this is merely to enhance the convenience you already have in that device. but as i have said. it is not officially supported.

The only cool thing is that the gadget can access your online content hosted in the Google Ecosystem. That means you can access your picasa hosted photos and youtube. this is interesting and maybe useful for the future because of the possibilities of being able to see google docs, e-mails, and even stream files whenever Google offers Storage online. at this point is only worthy to have if you got a PS3, otherwise don`t bother with it.
