Issuu Smart Look: Digital Documents Overlay Viewer

January 12th, 2009

One of the things i missed to post during the holidays was about Issuu very impressive new feature called Smart Look. this new feature allows you post links to document files in your blog that can be opened in a Lightboxed/Overlay Digital Document Viewer. that is what Smart Look is. a way to generate a Document Reader that can be opened in your blog without your visitors having to go anywhere. but that is not really the most remarkable thing. what it is remarkable is that while you need to Open the Overlay first. you can also jump to full screen from it and have a even better view of the documents. This previous inability to view the Digital Document in full screen directly from a Blog post or Blog page was my main objection to issuu. with Smart Look they almost have removed any complains or wishes i could have.

Issuu made up a Example Site where you can try out the different Smart Look Viewer based on what Document File are they loading:

Presentation (Powerpoint)

Document (Word)

As anyone can see by the pictures alone. the Issuu Smart Look viewer and document viewer is fantastic. for the purpose of reading and viewing presentations. it is already excellent as it is. the documents and presentations can be easily viewed and read on a regular monitor or laptop screen at the lightbox size. but if more is needed viewing them at full screen should be more than enough. it also reaches a new high for ease of use since they can be launched by a user with a click.

The only thing that is still a little jumpy is the zoom eye view and the zoom and drag option in the Magazine mode. the magazine mode as a lightbox is not enough to be able to read the magazine but it is enough to scan trough the magazine. the full screen view of the magazine mode will be enough to read the magazine is you got a big monitor but it will still not be enough for a regular monitor or a regular laptop with 14 inches of screen and less. the full screen transition also gives something to desire because it is Flex and it consumes a lot of resources so it will be a bad experience for old computers and netbooks. this is why i always wonder if that would be the same if the viewer would had been done in Silverlight. my guess is no. but we still have to wait for Silverlight adoption to grow more for we to proof that one.

Now my only request to issuu is a middle point version of their regular issuu widgets and Smart Look. give us a Digital Document Object that can be embed and adjusted in size but that can be able to jump to full screen view directly from it too.

But even with that little hole still there in Issuu. it is now the best Digital Document experience you can get to have and it should serve as the point of progress to evolve from. if so. this will indeed be the year were Digital Documents  and Digital Document Objects will find its heyday no matter the kind of content you want to display.

You can check more on it with this very quick demo video from Issuu

Uservoice Feedback Lightbox Enabled Widget Badge

January 12th, 2009

tmp5D2

Uservoice is a Feedback Service that can be easily compared with Get Satisfaction. more now that Get Satisfaction also offer a Lightbox Enabled Widget Badge just like the one uservoice became known for. not that lightboxes were not a already very well known effect. but it had not been used for that kind of focused use previously to uservoice use of it. but even when both uservoice and Get Satisfaction are mean to be used a easy ways to provide feedback. uservoice got a business plan and it is pretty much focused on it as a commercial and paid service that can be used for either a small business or a corporation.

But that don`t means you cannot use their free version for your blog or your little business if you don`t mind the limitations of the free version. another very particular thing uservoice had from the let go, was that they focused their brand awareness and the main driving force to its service identity into a Widget. this has of course proven to be great for them from what i have seen as i mentioned even the competition is now offering what they offer even if with another focus entirely.

To put Uservoice to work for you in the free version you only need to join the service and then generate a feedback tab like this one.

tmp5DB

This feedback tab can be activated in a click and with that it will bring up the Widget Badge within a Lightbox. the badge will then show up the most popular or active feedback thread given about your site, propose the use to give its own feedback or to leave a message directly using the feedback badge.

Once you have finished checking out the badge or sending a message. you can simply click anywhere outside the badge to close it down.  as you can see this is a good service to have a central repository of feedback and ideas left by your service users or blog readers. all in a place where you can respond and manage them while keeping them open for all to see. and if your service or blog gets to grow and you suddenly need more control and personalization. you then only need to upgrade the uservoice paid service and that will be it.

My only caveats with uservoice is that i feel it is not open enough and fast enough. i would like it if people would be able to vote from the widget badge and if it would be possible to even write comments to the ideas without even having to be registered. but gladly enough. i can get to fill my suggestions directly and publicly to them by using their own service with them and so can you.

Get Satisfaction with widgets

January 10th, 2009

Create a “Get Satisfaction” community to offer better help for your readers and customers. Participation is FREE for both companies and customers. Customers need not do anything except ask questions. Employees can answer if they feel comfortable with their knowledge on the topic.

Get Satisfaction is a community that helps people to get the most from the products they use, and where companies are encouraged to get real with their customers.

…and as you suspected…”Get Satisfaction” has a bunch of Copy and Paste widgets to put on your pages.

Get Satisfaction looks like a great addition to any page where some type of support may be needed.
I might consider creating a widget oriented “Get Satisfaction” community and including a widget on this site. What do you think?
