Facebook Fan Box : Blog Embeddable Fan Page Widget

July 15th, 2009

Because the race to grow and grow of Facebook cannot sustain of the site itself anymore, now you can get proper Facebook widgets. but don’t get too excited because it don’t mean great widgets of your personal account or great widgets of your content in Facebook to share in your blog.

It is all about Fan Pages converting into Widgets as Fan Boxes for blogs as Facebook states in the general details of the widget:

As a Facebook Page owner, you can implement the Fan Box widget on your own website to gain more fans and share your Facebook updates. Implementing requires pasting just 4 lines of code.

The widget currently has 3 components: “Button”, “Stream” (optional), and “Fans List” (optional). The widget can fit in a space as small as 200 x 64 (just the “button”) or offer a richer experience including recent posts and other fans at a full 600 x 544 pixels (width adjustable from 200 – 600 pixels).

So this means that it is for the brands, personalities and celebrities in Facebook to better market and target connect with you. This way if you stumble with Fan Box in the website of your favorite band, celebrity or brand and you are not already following them in Facebook. you can add yourself as a fan directly in the Fan Box Widget thanks to Facebook Connect. So next time you are in Facebook, the updates from that fan page will start reaching you.

All around a sound idea but i think that the widgets could be more flexible when it comes to customization because right now they look out of place most of the time like the photo examples above clearly show. Now if they started making widgets regular users could use to share what is in facebook beyond it. That would be truly useful.

Silverlight 3 is out

July 12th, 2009

image

9 months after Silverlight 2 got released and here we are with Silverlight 3. This time around there was no big update from Adobe so far and they have remained very quiet. that said Flex 3.5, AIR 2 and their improved Development Tools could arrive any day now or until the fall. So there will still be answers to be expected from their side soon enough.

Silverlight 3 is very big update and it comes with a lot of changes and benefits compared to Silverlight 2

So if you have been holding out, maybe it is time for you take the plunge and install it since you can expect more and more content to use it. That also means more widgets using it:

Install Silverlight 3    ( PC & Intel Macs – All Browsers)

Install Moonlight 2   (Linux and PowerPC Macs – Firefox Only)

For a full run down on Silverlight. I recommend you to read Scott Guthrie notes on the Release:

Scribd Updates With iPaper 2

July 12th, 2009

In the space of Digital Documents, Scribd is still #1. So they are now trying to move as fast as they can by entering into Issuu territory with ebooks. But since their main thing continues to be everything else, the most important thing is to keep a great user experience. thing they think can archive with the update of iPaper 2 that is their Flash based Embeddable Document Viewer.

The new iPaper looks as if it was made in Ajax and it cleans up most of the lines out of the design to give it a more adaptable look.

Even with update and it still being the leader, Scribd traffic is starting to get affected with the crazy and intense competition its facing with Issuu, DocStoc, Adobe, Google, Zoho, Docuter, Slideshare and EmbedIt.In that continue to advance against them. But the worse competition for Scribd will be if Microsoft gets into the game later this year in full force. If that happens i think there will be consolidation in this space and maybe Adobe will finally get a clue and buy scribd, unless scribd decides to merge with one of its competitors of course. After all, anything can happen.

Remember when Pandora almost had to shut down?. Then it didn’t but still had to live with a future full of uncertainty?. Many music and radio widgets didn’t were so lucky and started closing in the last 6 months because of the shaky ground they faced with the high fees and shaky legal status.

Now a deal for those broadcasting has been struck and it could mean the way for some recently closed music widgets to reappear or simply that the ones left standing will be able to continue and advance, instead of facing doom and gloom.
