Groupon widget

December 17th, 2009

groupon_logoGroupon is a service that facilitates steep discounts on products and services from local businesses in and around 26 major metro areas. A minimum number of users must sign up for a deal before it becomes available, creating an incentive to “socialize” these deals to friends on Facebook, Twitter and via email.

What a fantastic way to capitalize on two human desires that naturally feed off one another. The desire to save some coin in these slow economic times and the desire to share your good fortune with your friends and family.

Besides using Twitter, Facebook and email to spread the word, Groupon offers a convenient widget that you can paste in your blog or web site. Just pop into the Groupon E-Schwag page, locate the metro area nearest you, click on the embed code to highlight and copy…and then paste away! Groupon is growing rapidly!

Multiple sources tell us that Groupon, the surging Chicago-based startup, was valued at $250 million when they closed their recent $30 million venture round with Accel Partners and previous investors.

WTF?
One thing does confuse me though…Groupon, like most web businesses these days, has a blog. They also have a widget (obviously) but for some unknown reason, they fail to promote their service via their widget on their own blog. What gives, Groupon?

Vidrollr is a new creation from Invokemedia, the makers of HootSuite.

What is Vidrollr?

With its crisp, simple interface and ease-of-use, it’s a slick new way to share thoughts and get people talking within your branded environment. Effectively, Vidrollr is a non-intrusive advertising platform that engages your target audience in a way no other platform can and is especially suited for Social TV.

What is Social TV?

According to Wikipedia Social television is a general term for technology that supports communication and interaction in the context of watching television, or related to TV content.

Until now there has been no easy solution to integrating the two mediums. Vidrollr makes this issue easily solvable and does so nearly instantly. It is low risk since it uses existing technologies and it becomes a revenue center because it is branded/sponsored.

HootSuite’s keyword Twitter column embed

December 17th, 2009

I’m still not quite sure how to manage all the information that comes down the Twitter pipe…WOW!
HootSuite.com is making that task much, much easier!

You have to watch the video to get a good understanding of how HootSuite works and what it can do for you.

The Column Embed:
The feature we are focused on is the ability to embed into your blog, any “column” that you have created using HootSuite. Simplicity at its finest! All you need to do is create a column with your favorite keyword (up to three) or search criteria and then click on the “embed” button. This brings up the embed settings window which allows you to choose a title, dimensions, primary & background colors, refresh frequency and profanity filter. Once you have made your choices, you are then given the embed code to place in your site. (embed code is Flash)hootsuite_embed_settings

HootSuite is a relatively new service (1 year old approx.) and is winning many awards:

HootSuite has won Mashable’s 2009 Open Web Award for Best Twitter App
    Shorty
    Canadian New Media Awards
Groundswell Awards (selected as a finalist)

Here is what the embedded column looks like in WidgetsLab green.
