Tweetcloud widget is cool…but broken

January 14th, 2010

Happened upon tweetcloud after searching twitter for widgets.

tweetcloud.com offers exactly what you would think. The top trending Twitter topics in a standard Tag Cloud format. When you click on a topic, the most recent Tweets are loaded below the “tweetcloud”.

tweetcloud as you can see below, tweetcloud delivers everything…even some unsavory items.

tweetcloud widget

The tweetcloud widget was constructed utilizing the Clearspring widget platform. The widget displays a mini tweetcloud and when you click on one of the trending topics in the cloud, you are given a list (right in the widget) of the latest tweets on that topic.

Unfortunately, when you click the “back to cloud” button at the top of the widget…nothing happens. You don’t get to go “back to cloud”. You are stuck, unless you refresh the page.

I don’t know the solution because I don’t program JavaScript. But I’m sure its probably pretty simple.

You can see the widget at tweetcloud.com

You can also find the widget at the super secret Clearspring hidden tweetcloud widget page.

Best Buy “Best Selling” widget for affiliates

January 13th, 2010

Found this via Twitter

The Best Buy Remix blog just announced a beta of a “Best Buy Best Selling Widget” for affiliates of Best Buy.

I have included both a working version of the widget and a screen capture. The blog post indicates that the current test of the widget would go dark at a later date. I had to scrape the code from the page source in order to display it.
In order to get the actual widget, I would have to be a Best Buy Affiliate and I noticed that they don’t seem to provide the HTML embed code. Just links to various platforms such as Blogger, WordPress, Orkut etc. are provided to incorporate this widget.

The Remix blog post also indicates that a person can check local stores (via zip code) for product availability and also initiate a purchase through the widget. (almost makes me wish I was a Best Buy affiliate.)

The widget will show by category the top 5 best-selling products in the category selected. You can also enter your zipcode to see local store availability and then click a buy link to be taken to BestBuy.com to purchase the item. Additional photos of the item are also shown.

It appears as though Nintendo currently occupies 4 of the 5 “Best Sellers” spots in the “All” category in this widget. Is this a true indication of what is really Best Buy’s top selling items? Amazingly there is no category for computers. I wonder if affiliates aren’t allowed to sell computers?

Startups.com widget found on TechCrunch front page

January 13th, 2010

Startups.com the relatively new (Nov ’09) startup Q&A site created by blog KillerStartups has a widget that can currently be found in the sidebar over at TechCrunch.

about Statrups.com
Startups.com aims to be the goto place for anyone with questions pertaining to starting up and operating a business. Questions range from the simple “How to add value to my blog/site?” to the more complicated “How do I get visitors to my website?”.
Questions have a decidedly “tech” related theme, but are not limited in anyway to a “tech only” type of category.
When you post a question, it is placed in a queue and users can vote it up or down. Users of the site earn “reputation” badges that indicate different things like “asking a popular question” or Question voted up 25+ times” etc. So there is an incentive to patrol the site and answer or ask questions.

about the Startups.com widget:

The widget has very few options. You can choose two width sizes, 180 px or 220 px. The 180 px option tends to cut off the meat of the questions. Rendering that size option pretty useless. You do get to include a logo of your choice, but its limited to a 30kb png. The widget has an unchangeable web2.0-esqe Baby Blue color which may or may not clash with your theme. Its also coded with JavaScript.

Back in November, TechCrunch did a writeup about Startups.com

A year ago, KillerStartups bought the killer domain name Startups.com for a few hundred thousand dollars. The company didn’t do anything with it other than redirect to the KillerStartups blog. Today, it realunched as a Q&A site for business questions.

Startups.com widget on TechCrunch:

I see that the Startups.com widget is being displayed on the TechCrunch front page and I have to wonder what kind of $$ that set them back. I’m 100% sure that Widgetslab (the defacto widget blog since 2006) could have been persuaded to make space at the Top of our sidebar for the Startups.com widget.
