Flashlightworthybooks book list widget

January 11th, 2010

flashlightworthybooks.com is a site dedicated to taming the book information overload delivered by Amazon. They want you to have quick access to the best books available.

Amazon sells every book in print, but the choice can be overwhelming. Flashlight Worthy is here to help:
…Flashlight Worthy is nothing but thoughtful, hand-picked recommendations…
Organized into hundreds of useful, interesting, fun lists…
And all we do is books. :)

One of the tools they have created to help with sharing the best books is the “book list” widget. Each link in the widget takes you to a page on the Flashlightworthy web site where you get to see all of the books in that particular list. Each book has a description and is linked to the corresponding Amazon.com page, should you decide to purchase. The widget can be added to any webpage via simple copy and paste.

BookBox beta

BookBox is currently in beta and the author, Laszlo Kozma is looking for feedback. You can find his email address at the bottom of the BookBox page.

This is a dynamic widget that auto updates when you add new books. It is also designed to fit into the space that you put it. I have placed it into this post, then added more books. Upon refresh, my new additions were displayed and the images filled the space where the widget was placed. Each book cover is linked directly to the corresponding Amazon.com page where you can read details on the book, purchase, read or write reviews, etc.

Some comments on reddit indicated the need for more secure log-in features. I have to agree, simply because right now you are only required to use a password. No username is required.

One problem I have discovered: If you decide to change the number of books displayed in your widget, you will have to update the javascript code manually. This may make people stop using the widget.

you can either click the link in the widget or go here to see all the projects that Laszlo is working on.
