Windows Live Messenger IM Control

August 5th, 2008

There are already some Chat to IM widgets around and that get quite a lot of use. but pretty much all of them are from third parties. they are made as a communication gateway for a third party Multi IM client. that is of course good on itself and we will see more of them later but first i want to talk a little about Windows Live Messenger IM Control or Live IM Control for short.

This is a First party Widget, well Gadget since it is from Windows Live. that connect with Windows Live Messenger. The Widget is meant for you to use it in your blog or your website if your primary IM client is Live Messenger and there is close to 40% of a chance that may be the case.

And just like the Widgets from third parties its goal is pretty much the same. to let you connect with your readers, friends or clients depending where and how you may want to use it.

Using it is simple and you only need to follow these steps:

1.-Login to your Live Messenger web settings:

Go to this page and log in with the Live ID you use for Live Messenger

http://settings.messenger.live.com/Applications/WebSettings.aspx

2.-Change your Live Messenger web settings:

This is the full version and will operate directly in your page

II.-Button

III.-Status Icon

4.-If you choose the IM Window version you can also customize your Live IM control Widget

Choose you desired size and Color, the HTML code will update once you do

5.-Paste and Start using it

Place it in your blog, your social network profile or you website and start using it.

This whole process can be done in 3 minutes. so there you go.

I will place on in this post in order to demo it. i am not sure if i will have it here in the blog but it will be living here in this blog post.

FireFly Instant Overlay Chat

Firefly is a very simple idea,  having a instant chat for blog or website that can be activated via a Widget Switch you can place in your blog sidebar. the Chat is powered by a JS code you put in the code of your blog or website and if your visitors want to engage into a chat in your site with other visitors they can do it by sliding the switch and turning the chat on. once on this will load a overlay where you will be able to chat.  once enabled you will be able to talk with up to 50 people at a time.

The idea is not new, and that is because we already had seen ThatIsMyMouse . that pretty much does the same thing. and while it is not as pretty it is pretty much the same with the difference that ThatISMyMouse does generates a chat box unlike Firefly.

Firefly is a good option for those who already tried ThatIsMyMouse and where not convinced by it or like of not conventional chat widgets.

You can try it directly in FireFly site for a better effect since you always find from 5 to 10 people visiting. it also got a list where you can visit blogs using the widget to see how it goes on a regular blog..

Mibbit: IRC chat widgets for your blog and site

Mibbit IRC so easy, your mom could use it Webware Cool Web apps for everyone

If you have been using the Internet as long as me, IRC don`t needs any introduction, if you don`t not what IRC is, IRC is what you had previously to both the IM bloom generated thanks to ICQ and that later AIM, MSN and Yahoo made mainstream and Online IM clients like ebuddy and Meebo made ubiquitous.

It also was what you had previously to the surge of Chat Rooms so it is the Grandfather of both IM and Chat.

And in the same way that Meebo brought web 2.0 to IM in the Web, Mibbit does it with IRC, bringing it to your browser without the need of a desktop client or a Java Applet. going to the main pages of mibbit give you a full IRC experience and that results very enjoyable and easy for any to use.

But, they also developer a IRC chat widget for blogs. a compact  and less featured version of the full IRC web client but that you can put in your blog without a problem and that works cross browser -cross platform. why would you want a IRC chat widget in your blog instead of a threaded chat room widget like we have reviewed before?. because unlinke other new chat clients and chat services. there is always a audience and active users using IRC, if your blog is about Cars, or Fashion or Video games, you select or create your Channel in IRC on that subject. and the people visiting your blog can engage directly with you in that channel, but also any other user roaming IRC interested in that could end up in your channe, giving you a way to communicate with your readers and to extend your audience that no other Chat Client can archive.

Mibbit really surprised me, i never expected IRC to get the Web 2.0 treatment and much less be writing about it for my ·300th blog post here at widgets lab.

But i choose Mibbit  for my 300th post because it not something that i can tell you about but that i can fully recommend you. enjoy.
