Issuu Smart Look: Digital Documents Overlay Viewer

January 12th, 2009

One of the things i missed to post during the holidays was about Issuu very impressive new feature called Smart Look. this new feature allows you post links to document files in your blog that can be opened in a Lightboxed/Overlay Digital Document Viewer. that is what Smart Look is. a way to generate a Document Reader that can be opened in your blog without your visitors having to go anywhere. but that is not really the most remarkable thing. what it is remarkable is that while you need to Open the Overlay first. you can also jump to full screen from it and have a even better view of the documents. This previous inability to view the Digital Document in full screen directly from a Blog post or Blog page was my main objection to issuu. with Smart Look they almost have removed any complains or wishes i could have.

Issuu made up a Example Site where you can try out the different Smart Look Viewer based on what Document File are they loading:

As anyone can see by the pictures alone. the Issuu Smart Look viewer and document viewer is fantastic. for the purpose of reading and viewing presentations. it is already excellent as it is. the documents and presentations can be easily viewed and read on a regular monitor or laptop screen at the lightbox size. but if more is needed viewing them at full screen should be more than enough. it also reaches a new high for ease of use since they can be launched by a user with a click.

The only thing that is still a little jumpy is the zoom eye view and the zoom and drag option in the Magazine mode. the magazine mode as a lightbox is not enough to be able to read the magazine but it is enough to scan trough the magazine. the full screen view of the magazine mode will be enough to read the magazine is you got a big monitor but it will still not be enough for a regular monitor or a regular laptop with 14 inches of screen and less. the full screen transition also gives something to desire because it is Flex and it consumes a lot of resources so it will be a bad experience for old computers and netbooks. this is why i always wonder if that would be the same if the viewer would had been done in Silverlight. my guess is no. but we still have to wait for Silverlight adoption to grow more for we to proof that one.

Now my only request to issuu is a middle point version of their regular issuu widgets and Smart Look. give us a Digital Document Object that can be embed and adjusted in size but that can be able to jump to full screen view directly from it too.

But even with that little hole still there in Issuu. it is now the best Digital Document experience you can get to have and it should serve as the point of progress to evolve from. if so. this will indeed be the year were Digital Documents  and Digital Document Objects will find its heyday no matter the kind of content you want to display.

You can check more on it with this very quick demo video from Issuu

Docstoc now lets you upload via email

November 4th, 2008

Docstoc is the main competition against scribd. it trails it from afar but docstoc continue to accelerate growth little by little . and in a space as young and full of potential as it is the Digital Document space. stay in the race is half the battle. so now they will try to push the pedal to get closer to scribd with ther new feature. this new feature lets you upload from your e-mails. so you can simply send a e-mail with a main Office document format or with a PDF and get it converted into a Digital Document that can happily live in Docstoc and be view and shared as a document viewer widget.

One of the main differences i get from docstoc is that they paint themselves as the serious Digital Document hub. they want you to upload office documents and work documents, etc. so they aim for that niche and on those terms they could easily claim to be number one. so if you don`t trust your work e-mails to a service like this because you think it is too serious or too office work minded. don`t worry. docstoc want those kind of documents.

Google Book Search Embeddable Books

September 29th, 2008

I think it is safe to say that Google Book Search finally has garnered enough data for it to be useful. what better example of their recent release of Embeddable Books?.  This initiative from Google Book Search is part of the now clear future Google is paving for itself in the Digital Documents space. the interesting thing is they are doing it in a completely different way from those who dominate it right now like scribd and docstoc.

They are showing them as extension of two search verticals instead of jumping at it using Google Docs. the first vertical is of course Book Search. but the second one is the recently shown at TC50 Newspaper search. at first the business model behind them was not clear because more than likely there was not one to begin with. but the new Google Book Search shows that in terms of Books. using EBooks inside a Digital Document  model which allows to widgetize the experience and make it portable is the way to do enhance E-commerce and marketing for regular books selling. this is of course not the only reason. PR, Academic leverage and data mining through Social Book Sites are some of the other good uses for it.

The final and most important is to be able to test an effective Digital Document Widget and then spread that to Google Docs. something that could happen any minute now thanks to the added pressure Adobe Share and Zoho Share among the other Digital Document space leaders like the already mentioned like Scribd and Docstoc.

Right now. the entry barrier is not low enough to use this new Google Book Search feature in a way everyone can use it. but anyone with curiosity and some really minor tinkering can set up a one of the embeddable books for a blog post. this may allow for Book Bloggers (people who blog about books or about something in a book) to archive a level of interactivity and didactic value previously inexistent too. so the tool can be used for good right away.

If you want to use it now. you can generate the JavaScript code needed for one of the Google book search embeddable book viewer by going to this page:

It is not guaranteed to work. but it is the easiest way to get them right now.

Zoho enters the digital document game releases Zoho Share, aims at Adobe, Scribd and DocStoc

August 26th, 2008

Zoho surely not stops surprising me. they must be one the most daring companies around today. they are in the hardest spot you could be in and yet they continue to raise the bet. that is not only daring but also a little crazy. Zoho as some, if not most of you know is the Google Docs competitor.

Zoho produces what i consider the best and most complete Web Office Suite. it is way superior and more broad than Google Docs. so much that they not only say they compete with Google but are crazy enough to try to aim at the unbeatable Microsoft Office division Google  itself among big companies like Sun, Apple,Adobe and many other have failed miserably to unsettle. yet Zoho believe they can compete. they are of course wrong in the case of going against Microsoft. but they do have a nice chance of unsettling Google and Adobe. Adobe is already prepping up its own vision on what a  Web Office Suite should do. Google Docs is already dominating this space and Google takes very seriously the threat of Adobe and Zoho to their own solution that aims to hurt Microsoft. the dilemma here is that it will be even less possible for any of them to challenge Office since a competition war between the alternatives to Microsoft  is already brewing.

tmp819

Zoho Share on the other hand aims to the Digital Document space. a space that is actually dominated by independent companies like Scribd and DocStoc. a space where Adobe recently entered with Adobe Share and where they are actually the underdog. the entrance of the Web Office Suites into this space was to be expected, and it is something i said back at the start of the year when i commented on one a Scribd initiative.:

This initiative is a good way too for scribd to increase their footprint and their brand. and boy if they need it. as i already said.  this space is going to get worse for them with Google Docs, Adobe Share and Office Live natural progression into this space in a way it will not leave many Startups able to compete with them. scribd truly wants to be the company left standing in case they don`t get acquired and also in case other competitors in their space survive.

Later on the Adobe Share update happened, several Google Docs updates went underway and now this unexpected entry by Zoho confirms it. i wonder how long it will take for Google to follow suite now that they are quite late to the party.

tmp81A

Zoho Share Digital Document Embeddables and viewer are actually quite poor. but Zoho is known for evolving fast and they now got a foot in. so l expect them to evolve fast and offer something more akin to what docstoc does instead of scribd. the site in itself is actually good already and should prove a very great addition to those already using the Zoho Office Suite and a good way to persuade more people to try them instead of Google Docs.
