Scribd Updates With iPaper 2

July 12th, 2009

In the space of Digital Documents, Scribd is still #1. So they are now trying to move as fast as they can by entering into Issuu territory with ebooks. But since their main thing continues to be everything else, the most important thing is to keep a great user experience. thing they think can archive with the update of iPaper 2 that is their Flash based Embeddable Document Viewer.

The new iPaper looks as if it was made in Ajax and it cleans up most of the lines out of the design to give it a more adaptable look.

Even with update and it still being the leader, Scribd traffic is starting to get affected with the crazy and intense competition its facing with Issuu, DocStoc, Adobe, Google, Zoho, Docuter, Slideshare and EmbedIt.In that continue to advance against them. But the worse competition for Scribd will be if Microsoft gets into the game later this year in full force. If that happens i think there will be consolidation in this space and maybe Adobe will finally get a clue and buy scribd, unless scribd decides to merge with one of its competitors of course. After all, anything can happen.

Docuter:Upload Any Document File And Embed It As A Digital One

March 1st, 2009

There are many Social Digital Document services around that let you upload document files and then give them you out to embed. but having more options is always a good thing. Docuter is a excellent option to the already known digital document services. the important thing about Docuter is that it is focused on being a application first and a social service second .thanks to that, it supports the insane amount of 200 document formats. more than any other service out there and that is what makes this service stand out and the reason i am writing about it and you need to give it a try.

I didn’t saw any use of  a high spread sharing module. something that could certainly make the service even better. since it focuses more on the application than in the social features. there is not a well rounded and well developed social network behind the service but that should evolve as the services grows.

The document viewer with the service is flash based, it got a good full screen support and you can of course embed it everywhere. the viewer is simple but one good thing is that i found it to be lighter than others i have seen and that is a very good thing. the secret looks to be a mixture of ajax with flash since the viewer points to as the base for its tech.  i look forwards to seeing it evolve and catch up with the likes of iPaper and issuu.

The service is free and the only thing they are asking you its that you need an account since they don’t allow for public upload, but beyond that you could not ask for something simpler.

Digital Documents services surged in 2008 and i think that they could very well reach a mainstream status in 2009 as its use is exploding dramatically as people want to do more than just be able to share them in file form. they want to have the living in the web and this is the way to go.

After trying it out i can recommend Docuter to anyone that has to handle lots of documents around as part of their job or as part of their personal use. it may not be known but it sure its good.

Issuu Smart Look: Digital Documents Overlay Viewer

January 12th, 2009

One of the things i missed to post during the holidays was about Issuu very impressive new feature called Smart Look. this new feature allows you post links to document files in your blog that can be opened in a Lightboxed/Overlay Digital Document Viewer. that is what Smart Look is. a way to generate a Document Reader that can be opened in your blog without your visitors having to go anywhere. but that is not really the most remarkable thing. what it is remarkable is that while you need to Open the Overlay first. you can also jump to full screen from it and have a even better view of the documents. This previous inability to view the Digital Document in full screen directly from a Blog post or Blog page was my main objection to issuu. with Smart Look they almost have removed any complains or wishes i could have.

Issuu made up a Example Site where you can try out the different Smart Look Viewer based on what Document File are they loading:

Magazine (PDF)

Presentation (Powerpoint)

Document (Word)

As anyone can see by the pictures alone. the Issuu Smart Look viewer and document viewer is fantastic. for the purpose of reading and viewing presentations. it is already excellent as it is. the documents and presentations can be easily viewed and read on a regular monitor or laptop screen at the lightbox size. but if more is needed viewing them at full screen should be more than enough. it also reaches a new high for ease of use since they can be launched by a user with a click.

The only thing that is still a little jumpy is the zoom eye view and the zoom and drag option in the Magazine mode. the magazine mode as a lightbox is not enough to be able to read the magazine but it is enough to scan trough the magazine. the full screen view of the magazine mode will be enough to read the magazine is you got a big monitor but it will still not be enough for a regular monitor or a regular laptop with 14 inches of screen and less. the full screen transition also gives something to desire because it is Flex and it consumes a lot of resources so it will be a bad experience for old computers and netbooks. this is why i always wonder if that would be the same if the viewer would had been done in Silverlight. my guess is no. but we still have to wait for Silverlight adoption to grow more for we to proof that one.

Now my only request to issuu is a middle point version of their regular issuu widgets and Smart Look. give us a Digital Document Object that can be embed and adjusted in size but that can be able to jump to full screen view directly from it too.

But even with that little hole still there in Issuu. it is now the best Digital Document experience you can get to have and it should serve as the point of progress to evolve from. if so. this will indeed be the year were Digital Documents  and Digital Document Objects will find its heyday no matter the kind of content you want to display.

You can check more on it with this very quick demo video from Issuu

Issuu Turns into Publishing Network, Goes Pro and Continues To Evolve Fast with a Little Exception

November 24th, 2008

Almost a year ago. the start of issuu was not really that remarkable. it looked to be aiming to be something like scribd with nothing more than been focused more on magazines. fast forward to almost 10 months ago and they made clearer their intentions they wanted to be a Digital Document Publishing Tool. fast forward 6 months to 4 months ago and they went with the idea of being able to free themselves of Flash if needed and turning into a platform. finally. close to a month ago they raised 5 million dlls and updated in a huge way:

Issuu Pro
You asked for it, and we listened: A whitelabel version of Issuu without the sidebar. It’s perfect for small businesses, publishers, resellers – and many more. Even though the price tag is absurdly small, we’ve made publishing with Issuu Pro free for the rest of the year!
Read all about Issuu Pro and check out the official press release (want to blog about it? Screenshots and multi-language press releases can be found here).

Bulk upload, web-import and more formats
Now you can upload multiple files from your hard drive and webserver. Ever had problems with your documents? Try again, as our conversion engine now performs even better. You can even upload many new formats, including Word and PowerPoint.
Upload now.

Manage your files and bookmarks
Many of you have uploaded hundreds of files, and we needed a better way to manage publications. So we created a new My Library. It’s a bit like a file manager, but created especially for Issuu and your publications.
Try it now.

Search and you shall actually find
OK, we know our search page needed improvement. Now it’s here. It has a neat tag cloud and something we call Search Remix; a custom magazine created from your search results.
Try the new search.

Advanced statistics engine
We’ve been working hard on an advanced statistics engine. The first result is a new stats feature that shows loads of details about your publications’ performance.
My Library, select a document, and click Statistics to try it out.

New landing page, Publications page, and People Page
Since Issuu really is all about you, dear members, we wanted to make you and your publications much more visible. We’ve made community pages for that, and completely redesigned the landing page too. As an extra bonus you can now also select which language and country to sort by.
Check it out.

Viewer upgrade with music and download (links are coming, promise)
The viewer page has been optimized and learned a few new tricks too: Optional music and download. So, if you want music or download available for your readers, choose it while uploading (or choose it later in My Library). We’ll soon add support for links and search in Magazine and Presentation view (we already have it in Paper view).
See the viewer.

Platform: Search API and Viewer API
We just updated Issuu Platform with a search API, which enables developers to get feeds for custom search queries. We also added a new viewer API to open up for even more advanced integrations with that.
Check it out.

So now it is not only a just a web service or web utility. it is now a true Publishing House for Digital Documents and a Publishing Network with a revenue model and coherent and achievable plan for it.

There is only one place where they are not pushing as hard as they could and that is the widget. the issuu viewer for external use. I understand that they want people to go for landing pages and publisher profiles, etc. but they should consider going for the full experience. providing a full issuu experience right from the widget is a good thing. making it portable so you can set the size of the viewer and can be able to jump to full screen view is something that would truly show the point across of what a Digital Document needs to be. more considering it is not just text they are going for but full magazines.  maybe the way to monetize non pro issuu accounts would be inserting ad pages inside the magazines in a way they would blend with the content. i truly believe that until issuu manages to do that. they will be not living to their full potential even if right now i think that they are on a league of their own and they no longer should be compared to scribd or docstoc.
