Userplane and Meebo have been competing with their Chat Widgets for months now and every single time that it looks like Meebo has made a good advance over Userplane. they usually get pwned by Userplane harder. this time around is no exception. just after Meebo recent Hearst Deal. it comes from Userplane that their WebChat 2 Widget will now be Social.

What does that mean?. it means you will be able to use it in the Top Social Networks. the ones first supported are MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Hi5, Bebo, Ning and Flux. That pretty much cover the Top 5 Social Networks plus the Top Commercial Social Network and The Top Social Network Provider.

This move will be a huge blow to Meebo`s Community IM party and now it will have to catch up to Userplane yet again.

The last updates to WebChat  2. are sure in need of a new look to the Widget. so i will get to that soon enough.

Automotive.com Gas Pricing Widget To Look For Cheap Gas

November 24th, 2008

tmp123F

I have seen that the Price of Gas is now lower in the U.S.A. that is because right now they are using national reserves and because it is being a little subsided even if not fully on the record. i know because this made foreign Oil to tank since U.S.A is not consuming like before. this is not to last and Gad Prices could go up any time in the future. but even if they don`t. gas price cuts are not happening everywhere.

So what better than a Cheap Gas Price Widget to find the best Gas Prices?.

This Widget from automotive is of a very standard fare but counts with Clearspring Launchpad for High Spread Sharing. that means you can get it everywhere you want it (blog, social network, desktop). so save some dlls and give it a look using the “Grab it” button on the widget. the only thing is that it does includes a very jumpy Widget Ad. but aside from that it is a good widget.

October 15th, 2008

tmp9          image

Netvibes last big news is its current success with partnerships. the big news to come in Oct 23 is that Netvibes will have Facebook Connect integration. Facebook Connect is like Live ID Auth or MySpace Data Availability API. it allows Netvibes users to interact with Friends on Facebook. but it goes beyond just that. in Netvibes case is also a Gateway to get inside Facebook and for Facebook to be able to get Content to track inside the Social Network.

One of Netvibes strengths is that it is very capable for news sharing. so Netvibes users will be able to share news with their Facebook friends but also share photos, videos and yes Widgets. a huge deal for users because Netvibes got one of the biggest Startpage Widget Ecosystems. it is only second to iGoogle. but Google is a Facebook and Netvibes competitor. that is where this deal and integration makes sense for Facebook too that has to compete with The OpenSocial offerings.

This is great news. so as i said. Widgets will continue to be OK in Facebook.

Come2Play Now Got A Multi-Player API for Flash Based Game Widgets

October 7th, 2008

tmpB06

I initially wrote about come2play because they had some good game widgets and they counted with a directory of them that counted with High Spread Sharing modules for each game. Now they have something even more interesting going on. they now got a Multi Player API for Flash based game widget development.

This means that you can make multi-player flash game widgets with it and also can be ported to work in the Facebook App Platform (that also means Bebo and Friendster for that matter) or as a OpenSocial Widget-App  among promotion and distribution by come2play. that is if you do decide to use their tools and network that is.

tmp3F

But as a display of confidence they are also releasing it as Open Source.

Come2Play  new API should be interesting for Flash Game developers to poke around and i hope it gets used so we can see better game widgets.

They are also having a contest for those willing to try their API. so have look or read on about it later when they announce it.

Favtape: The Best And Easiest Way To Put A Music Widget Everywhere

September 26th, 2008

tmp10A

Favtape is a service that has been talked about everywhere lately. many tout it as “Like Muxtape but better” or “Music Revolution”, etc, etc.  while that kind of hype is of course too carried away and irresponsible. it would say that Favtape is one of best service around. it is not just based of from Muxtape. it is riffing Last.fm and Radio.Blog.Log too. it is pretty much like a mashup of things from those 3 services. the site is from muxtape. the discovery is from last.fm and the widget playlist sharing comes from Radio.Blog.Log. you get the idea. not that it is a bad thing. for the contrary. it is a brilliant implementation. Revisionism as it best.

tmp10C

The last part is what should be interesting to those reading Widgets Lab of course. so lets jump to that part. Favtape allows you to generate a automatic playlist from a search, from a year or by your own tailoring, etc. once you have generated a playlist. you get a “share” option link.

tmp10C

Once you click it you launch a window with the instantly operable and shareable music playlist widget generated from favtape.

tmp10D

The progression on being able to generate a automatic flash music widget is not the evolved thing. the fact it took me less than minute and that it comes widget a High Spread Sharing module to redistribute the widget/playlist is where progress is seen. in this case it is is using gigya wildfire.

That extreme easiness is what makes Favtape so good and the thing why people are getting nuts about it right now. there is only one single thing i don`t like.  the flash widget generated used the   XSPF Web Music Player code for a easy implementation i guess. it is a good widget because it is really light and straightforward. but its look is SOOOO UGLY AND DATED. it was ugly and dated back when it was launched. but now it truly looks like something that came out of 1999. it really needs a reskinning. i hope it can get a new skin because it truly needs it. beyond that. i think Favtape is the best and fastest “no frills” option to get a full song streaming music widget everywhere without any effort and in less than one minute (no account needed) for free.that kind of convenience and low entry barrier is hard to beat even if there are more robust and better services out there.
