August 10th, 2009

Serving as a extra from what it was known about Vizio new connected HDTV’s that will have Yahoo Widget Engine and OnDemand Video Services is that Vizio decided to not depend on Whatever Stream Widgets come via Yahoo TV Widgets or being forced to collaborate with Yahoo to get new widgets, like Verizon FIOS’s does (so far) with the Widget Bazaar. Vizio will have its own Widget Platform and will provide a SDK for developers interested in the new “Stream Widgets” space that comes with Widgets made for TV’s. This is thanks to the fact that the HDTV’s supports Adobe Flash. So it is only about Vizio showing developers the guidelines and toolkit to developers so widgets can be developed in the style Vizio wants them to be done. This way they will be swiftly included for use in the Vizio Connected HDTV’s.

CNET got a nice First Look video that touches on that and show the Two vizio models for release starting next month.

From the very same CNET, Erica Ogg makes her case on how Vizio offering is going to stand out with these Connected HDTV’s and it makes for good read too:

Scribd Updates With iPaper 2

July 12th, 2009

In the space of Digital Documents, Scribd is still #1. So they are now trying to move as fast as they can by entering into Issuu territory with ebooks. But since their main thing continues to be everything else, the most important thing is to keep a great user experience. thing they think can archive with the update of iPaper 2 that is their Flash based Embeddable Document Viewer.

The new iPaper looks as if it was made in Ajax and it cleans up most of the lines out of the design to give it a more adaptable look.

Even with update and it still being the leader, Scribd traffic is starting to get affected with the crazy and intense competition its facing with Issuu, DocStoc, Adobe, Google, Zoho, Docuter, Slideshare and EmbedIt.In that continue to advance against them. But the worse competition for Scribd will be if Microsoft gets into the game later this year in full force. If that happens i think there will be consolidation in this space and maybe Adobe will finally get a clue and buy scribd, unless scribd decides to merge with one of its competitors of course. After all, anything can happen.

Wikinvest Redesigns Website to become Financial Widget Startpage

June 28th, 2009

Wikinvest is a Financial Widget Startup that focuses in stock charts and financial data charts widgets that are embeddable and shared. now that is not enough to sustain growth so they issued a redesign to their website in order to be more like the financial pages from MSN, Yahoo and Google.

Many call that a hard sell. but it is not only worth a shot but actually doable as the info they provide is at the level and the widgets are really cool and you can take them to go. so if you check your stocks in the morning and want to make a blog on how bad they are sucking or gloat on them. you can add them to your posts not just as petty graphics. but fully functional stock charts.

Snippage: A Web Clip Widget Engine For Your Desktop

February 9th, 2009

With the advantage of a almost ever present online connection. having fully internet dependent widgets. and the very specific kind that fits the bill the best are web clip widgets. they are now a integral part of browser because of IE8 web slices and even the latest Google Toolbar.

Snippage is a web clip widget engine for your desktop. you can put as many web clips as your screen real state can bear. this way you obtain the content out from the sites you usually visit. that is sometimes more reassuring that some feed widgets that can have as much as a hour of delay and need to reformat the content..

Snippage is a AIR app and that means it can be stream installed and updated. without a hitch. those familar with .NET or .NET/WPF Click Once should be familiar with that concept very well. i usually don’t post on AIR apps but this is a very apt example to be here.

in order to get your Web Clip Widget engine. you get a very good snipping tool for the job with a web browser.  the only short coming with it is that it cannot render AJAX, JAVA, Silverlight content making it[is use a little bit limited/ but the tool and the execution of snippage is really good. it is clever and well designed. it also has a nice plus that is the fact it don’t consumes too much resources.

The only thing it needs is a better render engine to be excellent. the only things it needs to do is to tune performance even more and get a better design and desktop integration since  windows resizing for the browser and snipping tool could be better.

But if you like web clip widgets this is the App to get and i can recommend it.
