Viral Content Widget from BuzzFeed

January 8th, 2010

BuzzFeed.com tracks everything thats currently HOT on the Internet and everything that’s about to become HOT!

They have a customizable JavaScript widget (seen below) that can be configured to show a number of the latest topics. Custom colors and sizes with image size choices as well.
WordPress Plugin and PHP/PERL scripts are also available.

There’s even a static image badge if you want to promote BuzzFeed. (hmmm…doesn’t static mean non-changing? This image changes.)

BuzzFeed Tracks the Web’s Obsessions in Real Time.

We feature the kind of things you’d want to pass along to your friends: an outrageous video that’s about to go viral, an obscure subculture breaking into the mainstream, a juicy bit of gossip that everyone at the office will be talking about tomorrow, or an ordinary guy having his glorious 15-minutes of fame. And when you read BuzzFeed, you’ll always know the movies, music, and products that are on the rise and worth your time.

…and BuzzFeed wouldn’t forget all of those that don’t have websites to paste widgets into. So they have created a mountain of options for those of us that simply don’t want the hassle of maintaining a website.

# Apple Dashboard
# Yahoo Desktop
# NetVibes
# iGoogle
# PageFlakes

Whats curiously missing is a BuzzFeed app for the iPhone. You can always point your mobile browser to http://m.buzzfeed.com/ but I’, sure its just not as good as an actual BuzzFeed app could be.

Adding widgets to your blog or website is generally done for a couple of reasons. You are either adding widgets for a personal preference or as a tool to keep your readers engaged.

Why use Personforce?
A job listings widget such as the one from Personforce.com is a simple way to add a measure of reader engagement. Its viewed more as tool than a personal customization like a slideshow or music player. You can be assured that the jobs that are listed in the Personforce Job Box are legitimate, high quality positions with reputable organizations. They charge premium rates for job listings, which weeds out the scams and such.

Who uses Personforce?
You can find the Personforce Job Box on many reputable sites such as:

    TechCrunch
    VentureBeat
    The Linux Forums Job Board
    Yale Daily News
    The Stanford Daily Online
    The Harvard Crimson
(and many, many others! see all)

About the widget:
The Personforce Job Box widget uses JavaScript and comes in 4 different widths. 250 px, 220 px, 160 px, & 120 px. There is nothing complicated in attaining these widgets. Simply go to http://www.personforce.com/adformats.php and choose your widget. Copy the embed code and paste it into your site.

    Quote of the Day
    This Day in Jazz History
    Upcoming Releases

Some widget details:
Most of the widgets are a simple “copy and paste” of some code to place the widget into your site. The “get code” link associated with the “MP3 Download of the Day” widget includes a well rounded tutorial on how to customize the size and appearance of your widget using some basic CSS. It does not explain the intricacies of CSS. For that they suggest you search the Internet for CSS related information.
Almost all of these widgets contain added CSS that you can easily edit to alter the appearance of the widget to conform to your website scheme.

These widgets are a great addition to any Jazz music related blog or website. They are FREE to use and FREE to enjoy.

Online Recruiters Directory offers four widgets that allow you to provide job search capabilities to your readers. Selecting a simple combination of job category and location will bring you to the Online Recruiters Directory website to view available opportunities.

These widgets also allow hiring managers to locate persons seeking jobs in their desired categories. A great resource in this growing economy.

The larger widget that you see above is designed to expand in the space that it is placed.

Grab the code from: http://www.onlinerecruitersdirectory.com/request_widget.php

Update:

I had originally posted the actual widgets (instead of images) but the javascript seems to be coded in a way that it somehow modified/altered other elements on the WidgetsLab page. Most noticeable were the changes made to the post title font size and the blog title font size. Each were reduced to the font size used in the post. This is unacceptable!
It may be that it only affects the WidgetsLab template.

Use at your own risk!
