Viral Content Widget from BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed.com tracks everything thats currently HOT on the Internet and everything that’s about to become HOT!

They have a customizable JavaScript widget (seen below) that can be configured to show a number of the latest topics. Custom colors and sizes with image size choices as well.
WordPress Plugin and PHP/PERL scripts are also available.

There’s even a static image badge if you want to promote BuzzFeed. (hmmm…doesn’t static mean non-changing? This image changes.)

We feature the kind of things you’d want to pass along to your friends: an outrageous video that’s about to go viral, an obscure subculture breaking into the mainstream, a juicy bit of gossip that everyone at the office will be talking about tomorrow, or an ordinary guy having his glorious 15-minutes of fame. And when you read BuzzFeed, you’ll always know the movies, music, and products that are on the rise and worth your time.

…and BuzzFeed wouldn’t forget all of those that don’t have websites to paste widgets into. So they have created a mountain of options for those of us that simply don’t want the hassle of maintaining a website.

Whats curiously missing is a BuzzFeed app for the iPhone. You can always point your mobile browser to http://m.buzzfeed.com/ but I’, sure its just not as good as an actual BuzzFeed app could be.

Widgets On Apple Are Rotten Seeds

That is pretty much what Ross Rubin is saying in one of its “Switched On” posts. I happen to agree.in the case of Apple i think it is because just like it wrongly depended too much from Google for the first iPhone, it also did so from Yahoo and this is way more evident in Mac OS X Dashboard. The whole wait of it being kept fresh relies mostly on Yahoo making his stuff available to it. It is one of those features that almost look like Apple didn’t wanted to have.

To be fair is something i also see in Windows but that i something i will like to dedicate a whole post to. in the meantime Ross Rubin post makes for a good read.

Widgetops Universal Google Gadget Widget

It has been quite a while since i wrote about Widgetop and their Web, and Mobile Widget Startpage but that is because not much really has changed with them. they do got more widgets now (287) and they work well. but one of the odd things is that they still not support IE. even considering that IE8 has been out for a while now.. but one of the things i missed to post was that they now got something for those in the Mac and that use the Mac Dashboard widgets.

A universal Google gadget wrapper that goes in a Mac Dashboard widget. this means you can bring the gadgets you have in your iGoogle Startpage to the desktop.

NBC 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games Widgets

By now most of you have already enjoyed of the Olympics Games at home and already know that you only need to install Silverlight in order to do the same at NBCOLYMPICS.COM. but how about some widgets with that?. there are and there are plenty of them and they here live and ready to grab since it is such a special occasion.

You can get the code directly from the widget itself  or install it almost everywhere thanks to its High Spread Sharing module just like this:

I.-Look below the widget and see the “Add to: “ base and you will see there are some icons. those icons are for the most popular used solutions dedicated to the widget. you can install directly from those icons but what you want is to go to the High Spread Sharing module.

II.-Activate the High Spread Sharing module with the little up sign:

III.-You now have launched it and now you can choose from 26 sharing options for the widget including the generic embed code itself. that is all you need to get the widget.

      Some thoughts on  these Widgets

      These must be the most notorious and high profile widgets for 2008. you cannot get more mainstream than this. the widgets were made by ClearSpring and i must say they are excellently well done and i can imagine they required special tweaking to make sure the widgets could offer a a better performance that other widgets like these.

      What struck me more was the new “add to:” base , the further improvement of the ClearSpring Springboard (the High Spread Sharing module) and more than anything the accompanying High Spread Sharing module in the NBCOLYMPICS.COM widgets page. this must be the best and more feature HSS  module i have seen yet. they did not take any chances and added a second HSS module in order to make the widgets as shareable as they can possibly can get to be.

      This Clearspring Launchpad module goes apart the widget and it has everything:

      • 25 quick install icons for posting the widgets.
      • 2 email sharing options
      • 22 Bookmarking (including social news sharing)  options
      • 3 Desktop Quick Install options for the desktop version of the widgets (yahoo widget engine, vista sidebar and mac dashboard, it only lacked a google desktop option)
      • 2 embed options, one in JS and one for the Flash Embed code.

      Truly insane. this is exactly the kind of implementation any service should strive for and should be take in count for any Widget. lets hope we get to see this a  common practice from now on, my hat is off to Hooman Radfar (Clearspring CEO) and his team for getting this gig.
