IBM Blue Spruce

November 24th, 2008

There are some times that i feel IBM plays around with new tech or projects just for the hell of it. one of those times is Blue Spruce. Called “Browser Based Application Platform” or  as i like to call it: “lets see if we can make Ajax Web Tech be RIA Web Tech and  Cloud Computing Tech”. but the the truth is that IBM must choose one thing for this to be. I think it is more in line with Cloud Computing and this could be a way for IBM to look on how to compete with Windows Azure and Amazon Web Services. It may be actually something that could also be used along with Amazon so it is more of coming up with something against Windows Azure. That is because i just don`t see how this would be able to compete in RIA Web terms against Adobe, Microsoft or even Sun at this point unless Google went out of its way and implemented this tech, taking it to heart. The worst is that it just a 5 month old IBM Project and that it is at least 7 months away of being fit enough to actually use beyond IBM. that means that is it ever comes out it will find itself against a Mature Flash 10, Silverlight 2, Flex 3.0 and even JavaFX 1.0 to compete with if its indeed seeing itself as a RIA web tech. good luck with that.

That said. the concepts are interesting and their mere purpose could be to generate re-use of them into other tech. In terms of Widgets it is interesting because this would the way to get more powerful Mashlets that can interact together in a page as if they were developed equally and by the same team.

TwitterFountain Widget: Fast Stream of Tweets and Flickr Photos at the same time.

There are a lot of widgets for Twitter, and there are a lot of widgets for Flickr.  but how about a Mashlet  that combines the two of them into one?. specially designed for people that get bored easily. that is where TwitterFountain gets into the rescue. This Mashlet (mashup widget) can stream photos by tag from flickr so they can serve as a ever changing background for your Tweets. then just add your Twitter Username and voila. a almost insane burst of photos and tweets together in the same widget. another of those things that could only have came from the Dutch.

Fortunately you can control the crazyness with the widget controls to set the pace of your Photo and Tweet stream, choose the colors and also the size of the widget too. that makes it a cool and unique novelty widget. all of the controls are within the widget so anyone can use it and share it easily.

The Widget is in Flash so it can be placed pretty much everywhere but you will have to copy and paste the code by yourself.

JobFinder Mashlet, job search mashup widget

After talking about enterprise mashlets yesterday, i though it would be good to show one for the consumer side. and StickiWidgets got just what i needed to make my point across.

While it is a prototype and all, it is actually better than many pro widgets i have seen. so for being a mashlet (mashup widget) it is truly good. as its tagline implies (job search made easy) it goes even further to make job search a walk in the park by combining 3 job listing services:

SimplyHired, nPost and Indeed

  •

Searches are run against each of the services and the results are displayed in the widget.

Click on a job title to view a summary of the position. For more details from the source site, click on the “more details” button and a new page will open with the complete listing.

Whenever someone grabs the widget for themselves they will have the opportunity to set the size and default search criteria for their widget”

The best of this widget is that it got the updated clearspring launchpad too. so it got the best customizable High Spread Sharing i have seen so far. 27 services. this breaks SimplyHired Springwidgets record in pieces. the only major omission i can see in the new clearspring launch pad is Bebo. all the other relevant social networks and blog platforms got their quick install link within the widget.

Another high point is that while it don´t got the looks it works and does the job better than any other job search widget so far. a proof of how mashups and Widget Developing Platforms have changed the face of widgets this 2008.

On Enterprise Mashups

Corporate-enterprise Blogging is no longer a rare thing. Good enterprise Blogging is not a foreign concept either anymore. but Enterprise Blogging focused on Enterprise Widgets?. now that is something rare. at least i cannot say i had seen it before with this flair.

But that is what The Enterprise Web 2.0 Blog does in behalf of JackBe. What is JackBe?

A over simplistic explanation of JackBe would be to say they are the ClearSpring for the Enterprise Crowd with a PopFly approach. JackBe is about leveraging information into mashup widgets so companies can sort around critical, decision making data about a determined matter.  lets say you need to compare data from saleforce with data from google maps while also sorting out some of you own company workforce data into it, etc, etc.

They are pretty much the serious version of web mashup widgets. of course that corporate don`t like to call them that so they don`t get perceived as Trivial. the prefer to call them "mashlets". it is a fitting name, i give them that. but in their base they are info widgets. and they goal is to make data interaction and data sorting easier to manage and digest for corporate meetings and whatnot.

You can check out what mashlet is and acts like if you load them in a new tab from the two following examples:

Basic Chart Mashlet (click to try it)

Basic Grid Mashlet (click to try it)

I didn`t knew much about JackBe until a year ago when a friend told he was going to work for them here in their Mexican branch and i got learn more about them. i found it to be a quite interesting company. no wonder they did so well.
