Meebo Launches Widgetized Site Specific Instant Messaging Service

July 16th, 2008

Meebo don`t stop from surprising once again with a new product that will effectively help them grow but also fend off any competition they get from the other players in various niches of the Instant Messaging Business.

They now got Chat Rooms, a Blog Widget, Apps and finally a Website Instant Messenger called Community IM

Community IM is where they are now aiming to in order to provide chat to websites and at the same time to stay connected to the Meebo Network. this new offering looks suspiciously similar to Facebook Chat in a almost worrisome way but i guess that they don`t care too much to be cynic about it.

The chat will also work in pretty much the same way Facebook Chat works just porting a skin familiar to the site where this meebo powered solution gets to be. as seen in the photo in the case of PopSugar the skin for the chat module is pink and got a tag in the service as “sugarim”. further customization is more than likely to be added as it is tested into the now limited set of partners Meebo has chosen to test this. the business model is a Advertising deal with the site that will split revenue 50/50.

This so called Community IM as Nick O`Neill points out is also a blue print copy of Userplane IM service for websites up the business model.

I find it odd that they have chosen to copy facebook chat so closely without a logical reason, so it is more than likely that the status bar will serve as a way to serve the ads (Nick talks about a inline ads called SparkAds”) or maybe even the same kind of meebo app integration meebo got in its main site. another reason could be that it is just the form they wanted to have while they test the new service and it will not be there when it launches.

While this effort is a great one. Userplane continues to be more powerful from the business side because they have a really really strong advertising base and a big company backing them up (AOL, that also owns ICQ and AIM for that matter)

Meebo new adverts done with Promo Media Widgets.

June 9th, 2008

They started with wallpapers and custom branded Meebo Rooms but now they are finally doing more traditional promotional adverts that are served with a Promo Media Widget that sits inside a Expandable Tab and the base of the Meebo page. you could say the tab resides in their “status bar” to give it a more common analogy.

The first to get into the chance of use that advertising will be big brands like universal and bands like weezer.

Meebo will not only be showing those ads but will be monitoring and serving all the metrics of the campaigns.

Zembly: Have it your way and do Widgets easily.

Just when i thought things could stay calm for a week in the widget world and now i find Zembly.

Zembly is another Widget Developer Accelerator. it is almost the counterpart of what Sprout is.

In this case is also about the code and not the just the interface . The way it lets you do the widget development reminds me a lot of PopFly and Musestorm Engagement Platform with a more peachy interface. it also got another thing that popfly uses to let you develop  Silverlight Widgets and that is Dapper integration.

Dapper allows you to create utility code from pretty much any site and re use it. in the case of PopFly you use it to create Windows Live Gadgets and Games.

In the case of Zembly you use it to create other kind of widgets-apps that can be ported to be used in several platforms (that is where the musestorm reference comes from)

You are going to be able to create widget-apps for Facebook, OpenSocial, iphone and even Meebo.

This start up is in Private Beta. but you can join the private beta if interested directly from their promotional Blog Widget at their site:

I am looking forward to check it out and see yet more disruption in the Widget World.

Meebo Platform: A Widget Platform?

November 21st, 2007

Develop meebo applications!

Yes, yes it is.

This affirmation comes from a friend asking me if Meebo new apps could be considered Widgets.

Because they are widgets from a modular sense, in the same line of thinking of Windows Live Spaces and most Silverlight widgets right now: they are loaded up inside a Iframe, the rest depends of the code of the widget being supported or not. but Meebo Apps are pretty much JavaScript and Flash apps. something that can easily be reiterated by the Meebo platform page.

Aps developed in Meebo are simply run by the opening of a specific iframe that launches the desired option in the Meebo launcher (by the very clever rocketship button.

It is clear to me now that Meebo does follow a specific line of inspiration while replicating a desktop client; and that should be Yahoo!. from corny emoticons, to corny backgrounds and the way the video chat works, but with the recent news of Games in Meebo it becomes crystal clear that they do follow more closely Yahoo! than Live Messenger or Gtalk.

And if you follow on the widgets as modular services idea, it really shows that it is right to think that way when you see some of the names in the list of the Meebo partners.

This developments in Meebo also push on the idea of embedded services where you tie and bind the providing of a service thanks to a widget module linked with a API; something that will become more and more frequent.

I will review Meebo Platform in more detail in a later post, meanwhile if you want to try out the widgets you only need to enter with any of your IM id`s to check it out without the need of any registrations.
