Ning Gets OpenSocial Support For Profiles = Widgets For Your Ning Profile

October 15th, 2008

tmpE

Ning is a Social Network provider. anyone can create a Social Network and join the Ning Community. it could be considered the Blogger.com for Social Network given how quick you can create a Social Network for whatever you have in mind (that is allowed) without having to work much for it. that is is why the recently reached 500,000 Social Networks in Ning. of course that most of them are fodder but given the quantity of Social Networks created there are a lot of jewels in the Ning Community

Widgets and Widget-apps (Social Network integrated Widgets) has always been a weak spot for Ning. Having that in thought. Ning did found a good solution by going with OpenSocial. there are many Instant Social Network providers now that want to compete with Ning. i seriously doubt any of the late in the game competitors could really make a dent to Ning but Ning is not taking any chances. on a second thought. they just needed Widgets and they needed them fast to make their users happy after the whole Widgets Laboratory fiasco that left Ning in a little PR storm not too long ago.

OpenSocial Support fixes both problems and replace them with 3 perks for them:

1.-Staying way ahead of any possible competitor

2.-Getting Widgets and Widget-apps to make Ning users happy.

3.-Ning gets a better Developer Network that the one they had.

This will start with Users Profiles and the support will be limited to 30 widgets available right now while the Support gets better and more OpenSocial Widgets get ported to work with Ning as more OpenSocial developers get interested with Ning. while this is not a full solution since it is only for Users Profiles. OpenSocial Widget Integrations for the actual Ning Social Networks should follow fast enough.

Ning Official Announcement

OpenSocial is now live across our more than 500,000 social networks this morning. This release replaces and improves our older “Gadgets” beta functionality, and enables Network Creators and their members to add all sorts of great new features, or Applications, to their profile pages with a single click.

Each social network on Ning now offers more than 30 OpenSocial applications from which to choose, including file sharing from Box.net, poll creation from Polldaddy and e-commerce from Shopit.

It’s been a pleasure to work with the vibrant (and ever-growing) community of OpenSocial developers and see the diversity of the applications they’ve created.

Dave Westwood, who built a fantastic application called BuddyPoke, was especially enthusiastic, stating that “Releasing BuddyPoke on Ning has been the easiest port we’ve done, taking just an hour to be up and running. Excellent documentation. Congratulations!”

Here are some cool highlights of our OpenSocial integration:

  • The OpenSocial directory on each network automatically inherits the branding and visual design of that network.
  • OpenSocial applications on Ning can inherit the visual style of the member profile page to which they’re added.
• OpenSocial applications are automatically integrated into a network’s viral loops. The ability for OpenSocial applications to write to a member’s latest activity feed, send messages on behalf of the member and spread using a network’s default viral sharing options are all there by default.

So there you have it. Ning Widgets will be now OpenSocial Widgets. that is another good news for those that have chosen OpenSocial to develop as they now count with other option to display their work.

Come2Play Now Got A Multi-Player API for Flash Based Game Widgets

October 7th, 2008

I initially wrote about come2play because they had some good game widgets and they counted with a directory of them that counted with High Spread Sharing modules for each game. Now they have something even more interesting going on. they now got a Multi Player API for Flash based game widget development.

This means that you can make multi-player flash game widgets with it and also can be ported to work in the Facebook App Platform (that also means Bebo and Friendster for that matter) or as a OpenSocial Widget-App  among promotion and distribution by come2play. that is if you do decide to use their tools and network that is.

But as a display of confidence they are also releasing it as Open Source.

Come2Play  new API should be interesting for Flash Game developers to poke around and i hope it gets used so we can see better game widgets.

They are also having a contest for those willing to try their API. so have look or read on about it later when they announce it.

hi5 integrates widgetbox custom widget galleries, partner for OpenSocial widget distribution

August 26th, 2008

Hi5 last report about its 2008 outlook was quite positive since it showed a surge in growth and user engagement. widgetbox on his own regard launched its Widget Custom Galleries offering as a way to evolve and extend distribution of widgets beyond the widgetbox site and into Social Networks or pretty much any site that wants to do so. the more integrated version of said custom widget galleries were reserved for partnerships or special deals.

hi5 decided to give Widgetbox custom galleries a try. but widgetbox may have looked at a opportunity and a partnership was then formed. the deal gives hi5 a more integrated version widgetbox custom galleries and it gives hi5 the chance to allow OpenSocial widget and widget-app developers that are using hi5 for their Widgets and widget-app as a springboard for distribution thanks to this deal with Widgetbox.

If hi5 is to be believed, there have been at least 2 million widgetbox widget added to hi5 and that has resulted in 65,000 subscription to widgets. the clarity of what exactly does these numbers mean slightly eludes me. if a hi5 representative would like to clear them up for me i would gladly update his post.

in the end it is quite a good set of deals for both hi5 and widgetbox. widgetbox assures  growth along  reach and influence gains for their Widget Distribution network by partnering with the most promising in terms of growth Social Network and hi5 gains even more ways to ensure engagement not only from its users but also from the developers that take a chance with hi5 and its OpenSocial based platform. the most interesting widget the hi5 platform has produced so far is the pixverse pixchat widget, which was so good in hi5 eyes that they ended up acquiring it almost two months ago.

OpenSocial gets to 350 Million Users, growing, but not enough.

August 22nd, 2008

Techcruch is reporting that OpenSocial, the multi social network application platform backed by Google has reached to an estimated 350 Million users. while this sounds like a whole lot. the install are not anywhere close (around 150 million ) to Facebook Application Platform with over 700 million installs. even then, 5 new partners will join and this project the platform to 500 million users. but projection to see if OpenSocial Application Installs can get a lot more close to Facebook is not available.

This does makes me wonder if OpenSocial would get to need be supported in at least 15 social networks in order for the number of installs gets anywhere close to Facebook 700+ million installs. that is without questioning the actual use of the apps in the social networks part of the OpenSocial Foundation and Facebook.
