March 2nd, 2010

You know them…the little green buttons found near the bottom of many thousands of blog posts across the Internet.

Well, Share This has gone social. Create a ShareThis account and now you can tune into what is being shared in real-time across the net.

Check out the ShareThis Stream page to see what they are talking about.

…did you notice that they mentioned a widget in the video?

The widget is still in “invite only” beta. You’ll have to sign up at http://sharethis.com/publishers/stream

ShareThis new version will be more Social

A good piece of context to the recent madkast acquisition by share this and the AddThis Acquisition by Clearspring is the news of ShareThis new version that is right now in Beta, Webware had a quick run on it and they even think it could be Disrupting to sites like Digg, Reddit and yahoo buzz  i don`t see it that way. i think that at most they could be aiming at competing full on with MyBlogLog with some little bits taken from Digg, stumbleupon and delicious.

That would be a good idea. while there are several other competitors to MyBlogLog. not one is able to compete one on one with it. ShareThis could if they wanted. after all it would make more sense for them to do that than going the route webware hints and biting the hands that feed them. well.it would be more logical and strategic…

They could actually be able to compete with Blog Directories and Widgetbox new blog network while they are at it. well if they do want to. but those would be good ways to grew and have room to grew in the long term. more now than ever, as they will have to compete with a new AddThis now as part of Clearspring.

The new design of the Widget button don`t convinces me completely. i would prefer something like what Tell-A-Friend has done. but the social pages and user pages DO convince me as something quite cool.

I hope to get into the new beta soon. so ShareThis. why i don`t have this already?. seriously?.

madKast to be acquired by ShareThis

September 26th, 2008

Derek wrote about MadKast over a year ago, shortly after i joined Widgets Lab. then he implemented it here in the blog and ended up ditching it because of integration problems. back then. the differences with ShareThis were not really significant as they are now. ShareThis now offers support for more services and got better integration. this allowed ShareThis to surpass all the competing Link Sharing Widgets and gained them serious financial backing.

Madkast was the one option that at the time that looked to be the widget that would be able to compete with ShareThis. this of course never happened because madKast glacial development pace compared to ShareThis. but that not means they didn`t had interesting tech and the right ideas. ShareThis seems to think so because they are now acquiring them. something that validates the approach madKast had. the reason for ShareThis to buy them out is because they don`t want to take any chances and solidify their first place in Link Sharing. a must because of the funds they have so far raised.

The competition in this space is also hard. ShareThis continues to compete with AddThis, AddToAny and the relatively newcomer Tell-A-Friend among other lesser known solutions like Addit and iBegin Share. Tell-A-Friend is the more likely to be able to compete with ShareThis from a tech and implementation point of view if it evolves fast. AddThis is just second to ShareThis and they continue to grow fast. by acquiring madKast. ShareThis ensure their winning position against their competition. no matter if their competitors do manage to evolve fast or not. all thanks to the complemented tech and developing team refresh they will get from madKast.

The only thing i hope so. is that this means we will see ShareThis improving their implementation and ease of use in the same way some of the competing widgets have done.  my preferred executions continue to be Ibegin share and Tell-A-Friend.

I did tried out iBegin Share and found it to be superior in some ways to ShareThis. but their slow development pace and lack of proper support for Internet Explorer made me ditch them in favor of ShareThis. after some time using ShareThis and having tried all the other widgets. it is easy to understand why they are a success.  it resumes to development pace, browser support and good analytics. it will be interesting to see what the next versions of ShareThis will be like with the added value of madKast.

ShareThis to add live count indicators, starts with digg.

Not to be outdone by Add To Any with their self adjusting widget update. ShareThis have updated their widget to offer support for more services in the “Post To” section. now you can also see HI5, Friendster, Orkut and Livejournal. but the real jewel of the update is the hint that they will be now supporting live count indicators for Social Bookmarking and Social Content Sharing sites. the fist to be supported is digg. so you will be able to see the times a link has been dugg. this is pretty much alike to what you can see in Feedburner with the FeedFlare indicators.

While these updates are welcome. these widgets are still a long way from the potential they could archive so it is plenty room for them to grow yet.

Add to Any Widget can now adjust to browser history for recommendations

Add To Any,  the button to enable multiple ways for sharing or subscribing in blogs is now experimenting with a smart version of the button that will be able to offer up the most adequate choices based in browser history.

it can put share in twitter as your first option if you have just been there recently or not  prioritize anything and show itself without changes if you haven’t been in any of the supported services sites recently. this of course is a way to make participation to go up. a benefit that not only helps add to any but helps the blog using the smart Add to Any button.

i am glad to see evolution in Add to Any. it really needed it too and now it got this and analytics.

Now it will only be a matter of time for ShareThis to issue a update and that is a good thing.
