TwitterCounter: Twitter followers chicklet

June 13th, 2008

tmp185B

TwitterCounter is a service that offers a chicklet so you can keep track of your Twitter Followers and also to give you bragging rights and to give another novelty to put in your blog and show how good of a tweeterer you are.

It is very simple, you only input your Twitter username and you will be greeted with a Feedburner like page. just like this one that shows leo laporte twittercounter chicklet. and just like in feedburner your count is updated daily.

As you can also see you are then offered the code to place in your blog and if you are not content with the style of the default chicklet you can choose from four colors in total.

I find this a cool novelty for microbloggers and a fitting homage to that blogging on its own that microblogging is now getting counter services too. it shows that microblogging is now fully assimilated into the web.

Plurk: microblogging in a interactive timeline

June 3rd, 2008

tmp32C3

After Derek called me out to talk about Plurk i gave it a new look. at first i thought i would hate it. but i ended up liking the idea. i loved the idea of a interactive timeline representation while microblogging and that in the same way i could sort out the people i can follow, be friends with and such. the whole idea is a step up from twitter. but pretty much anything can be a step up from twitter that now even not only crashes but loses features while doing it so.

Plurk is very simple to use but its way of thinking is something out of things i have seen in photos with AOL circavie and with the not so old YouTube Timeline.

I also like the Plurk Widget. it is simple, yet well done for a first attempt. even if i am now starting to see with a little disdain at widgets that don`t got any kind of High Spread Sharing. but considering the age of Plurk, i think i can give them a break.

tmp33B3

But i would like to see a more spreadable Widget for round two and i could like to see a version of the widget that imitated the timeline in the main site. now that would be a nice touch.

Plurk as a service is kinda like the mashup of many Twitter Derived Services/apps with a new posture on how microbloging could be better digested and tracked. i think it works. it also works that you are encouraged by using the service with good karma. something that makes you more noticeable and makes you a prominent member of the plurk community because of it and that everything you need to do can be done without transitions and in a manageable and attention efficient way. BIG props on that.

Pretty much the only thing i don`t like is the design look. i think that is truly terrible but that is the  part they can easily improve them most fast.

While Derek puts it already in terms of being a lifestreaming service. it is still not there. however it may already get there since it has been acquired by Pheltup.

tmp32B4

And while i am not in the private beta yet. it pitches itself as:

“The Social network that tell you WHO is doing WHAT but WHY”

  • The Who should be a profile
  • The What should be a microblogging element
  • The Why should be a advanced lifestreaming element.

(because if that is not it, then it would really be incredible and out there)

So, while many where excited about Plurk. maybe we should be excited about Pheltup?.

If you want to add me in Plurk. i am already there in this page

*UPDATE* :P heltup is a hoax. i was told by 10 different people of it and there is actually a comment from  akan of the plurk team to emily chang on it:

Emily, official note here on behalf of Plurk.

We have NOT been acquired by Pheltup.  It appears they instigated this entire ruse with a fallacious tweet late yesterday which caught on like wildfire. However all indications point to Pheltup being a rather elaborate hoax amongst A-list twitterers; the crude and unwholesome name and the fact the domain pheltup.com was registered merely 10 days ago should evidence this. Would be appreciated if you could remove this piece or alternatively, please contact us directly to confirm this, if you so require.

Best

So i`ll be damned, they got me beause they got jodi church-wagner on it from who i first reported by. i make the update because if ther eis something i am proud of its of my fact checking. never late for the truth.

Jaiku Official Widgets and Badges

May 31st, 2008

httpvinebergcommunicationscomclientsbasecampmediajaikujaiku_hires_RGBjpg

Jaiku is better than Twitter.  it got comments, it supports Channels via #channelname, it got Geoloc positioning (or manual), indicative gesture icons, IM bot, Search, Feed Importing and had better support in phones when it came out.  and it also got Better Official Widgets and Badges.

I decided to post about Jaiku because there is a renovated interest in a Twitter competitor because of Twitter less than stellar performance and the fact that while Twitter got a ecosystem of third party apps. if the sources fails. everything fails. and the problem with Twitter is that it now fails more beause of the stress brought by API usage than anything else.

Jaiku don`t got any of those problems. their problem is called google and being neglected by it. but somehow the whole jaiku project may burst into life once again because it is said that there is no coincidence that the Android Logo and the Jaiku Logo share the same color and design and that Jaiku will serve as Android social network.

So better to be prepared than sorry right?.

With Jaiku you got two options: JS badges or Flash Widgets.

JS Badges

  • I.-Online/Offline indicator
  • II.-Single Status Message badge (from minimal to detailed)

Jaiku Presence Badge

They were the first Jaiku Widgets and now Widget Evolution makes them more of a badge now.

Jaiku JS Badges

Flash Widgets

  • I.-A little river of the latest Jaiku updates (Stream)
  • II.-A one at a time SlideShow of the latest Jaiku Updates with Map for GeoLoc Positioning (Map)
  • III.-A one at a time slideshow of the latest Jaiku Updates without Map (Simple)

Jaiku Badges

The Flash Widgets come with 6 predefined color beyond the default one you see here or you can create your own color combination if you want.

Jaiku Flash Widgets

As part of the common Google Acquisition. Jaiku is now invite only and if you don`t got a Jaiku Account don`t worry. i got 10 Jaiku Invites so if you want one just leave a comment or write to me.

If you are already part of jaiku and have not revisited it i recommend you to do it. you can also Add me at http://AvatarX.jaiku.com or send me a message at my Jaiku channel in #Avatar.

Profilactic Social Aggregator Badge and Lifestreaming Widget

April 17th, 2008

Copia de Profilacticcom - smorty71's mashup

I have been talking a lot about Lifestreaming, Lifecasting and Social Awareness Widgets lately and it is not because i want to give Mark Krynsky some competition, i am not, he is doing a great job already. it is simply because there is a lot of buzz on that niche right now. and of that buzz, there are Widgets news to cover.

And in the middle of all that buzz and hype, i always regret not having covered pioneer Startups first before getting to cover what is predating them.

One of those cases is Profilactic. they are pretty much the main Social Aggregator Profile Network and one of the First Lifestream and Lifecasting Solutions made easy. they Aggregate 173+ services and you can customize your own services to be aggregated into, do web clippings (limited) and keep up with the update rate you and your friends have online.

It is pretty much THE Social Aggregator Network Profile in terms that you can put all your information in there.

They have been around for some time now, so how it is that most have not heard of them?

Profilacticcom - smorty71's mashup

Well, that is another matter that i find very very understandable, given the uninspired design, the over complicated way to sort features, the bad logo that makes me think of Rocketeer and Cadillacs  without forgetting  the terrible name.

I would explain that further, but this is not the right blog to do so, i will profile them later in one of the new blogs i am cooking up.

Now, don`t get confused by what i said, i am not saying i don`t like their service, in terms of what they do, they do more than any other service and provide simple way do grab a badge so you can extend what they are doing for you to your Blog or Site.

You can make a Online Awareness badge so people know where to find you online:

httpwwwsmorty71com

And you can also make a badge with your Online Lifestream and take it with you.

httpwwwsmorty71com2

While i think that Profilactic have done great by making very easy for users to have their Badge and Widget. they should consider offering customization so you can have it on different forms and factors.

Offering versions of their Badge and Widget done in Flash or Silverlight would also be a win, Get High Spread so they can be easily installable, etc. and on very personal opinion replace their button with something that can actually be read and look decent.

Obviating the Branding, Organizational and Design wise mess Profilactic got in their hands. they are still the best solution if you are a power user that got a very active Online Life and Online Presence, at least up to now. but they still got time to make it work right and gain mindshare before their new competitors can Out pace them.
