Viral Content Widget from BuzzFeed

January 8th, 2010

BuzzFeed.com tracks everything thats currently HOT on the Internet and everything that’s about to become HOT!

They have a customizable JavaScript widget (seen below) that can be configured to show a number of the latest topics. Custom colors and sizes with image size choices as well.
WordPress Plugin and PHP/PERL scripts are also available.

There’s even a static image badge if you want to promote BuzzFeed. (hmmm…doesn’t static mean non-changing? This image changes.)

BuzzFeed Tracks the Web’s Obsessions in Real Time.

We feature the kind of things you’d want to pass along to your friends: an outrageous video that’s about to go viral, an obscure subculture breaking into the mainstream, a juicy bit of gossip that everyone at the office will be talking about tomorrow, or an ordinary guy having his glorious 15-minutes of fame. And when you read BuzzFeed, you’ll always know the movies, music, and products that are on the rise and worth your time.

…and BuzzFeed wouldn’t forget all of those that don’t have websites to paste widgets into. So they have created a mountain of options for those of us that simply don’t want the hassle of maintaining a website.

# Apple Dashboard
# Yahoo Desktop
# NetVibes
# iGoogle
# PageFlakes

Whats curiously missing is a BuzzFeed app for the iPhone. You can always point your mobile browser to http://m.buzzfeed.com/ but I’, sure its just not as good as an actual BuzzFeed app could be.

California Budget Problem Widget From The Governator

February 2nd, 2009

Properly called “Legislature’s Failure to Act” widget comes from Arnold Schwarzenegger also known as “The Governator” and tells you how bad is California Budget Problem and calls for Awareness on the issue.

The widget badge is a good form factor and gives a lot more of  a impact than a Active Badge and it also allows for the badge to better tracked and to spread faster. that is a good reason to use a widget and good way to use one too.

The Widget comes from Clearspring and it counts with a really compact adaptation of Lunchpad that is their High Spread Sharing Module. if you are in California is a interesting enough widget to look into. just click the “Get & Share” link in the widget to grab the widget.

Hulu Powered Splashcast Embeddable Content Channels

December 30th, 2008

Some weeks ago, Splashcast announced that they would be building special Splashcast Embeddable channels with Hulu Content. a lot of these channels went live right with the announcement. but they have been evolving since then. that is the greatest point for those Widget Channels. they evolve.

Many wondered the why of a Splashcast partnership since Hulu already has some really good Widgets. the reason is Facebook and General Spread.  the best positioned space for Splashcast is still Facebook and the fact it uses Gigya Wildfire for its High Spread Sharing. this gives Hulu extra lanes to distribute Hulu influence and in the case of Splashcast. it gets them not only a great gig but also better brand visibility. the same that should result in more white list gigs.

And while Splashcast also highlights MySpace as one of the main ways to use the widget. Hulu already got its bases covered there. so Facebook + Else is the biggest win for Hulu.

I think that should make it clear enough why it is a win-win for both. but from the user side. it is also a good choice since you can expect a quality widget and you can expect be able to take the widget without any effort to pretty much all of the relevant online destination thanks to gigya.

I like Splashcast Widget Channels. but i really wish if they were more customizable and offered lite versions of them. but as a fully featured media widget. it does the job and it does it well.
