Niall Kennedy…

My goal for the conference is to provide two days of intensive education about the current state of the widget industry and share best practices with the many new publishers entering the space. This year’s conference spans two days, October 15-16, covering both the business and implementation of widgets.

donors-choose-widget.jpg

Give back to the community with the DonorsChoose widget. Allow your readers to pledge donations to schools to help fund needed class projects. You get to choose the project to help fund and you get this cool widget to display on your blog. As you can see, the widget displays the challenge amount, the percentage at which your blog stands and a ‘donate to my challenge’ button.

I happened to see this on TechCrunch and followed the link to see what it was about. Thats when I discovered that quite a few A list bloggers were utilizing this widget. Fred at A VC,(currently in the lead) Engadget, All Things Digital and others (DonorsChallenge Leader board)
DonorsChoose says…

DonorsChoose.org is a simple way to provide students in need with resources that our public schools often lack. At this not-for-profit web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals, whom we call Citizen Philanthropists, choose projects to fund.

Proposals range from “Magical Math Centers” ($200) to “Big Book Bonanza” ($320), to “Cooking Across the Curriculum” ($1,100). Any individual can search such proposals by areas of interest, learn about classroom needs, and choose to fund the project(s) they find most compelling. In completing a project, donors receive a feedback package of student photos and thank-you notes, and a teacher impact letter.

Weather widget for anywhere in the world

weatherforecastmap.png

A cool little JavaScript sidebar blog widget displaying the current conditions with a link to a weather forecast for the next five (5) days.

There is also a handy chart indicating averages for the current month as well as the next month.

Unfortunately all forecasts are in metric with no option to set to imperial.

Weatherlet.com Weather in a Flash

August 21st, 2007
weatherlet.png

Weatherlet.com weather widget is a cool looking 3D display of current conditions and a 5 day outlook.
Each day’s forecast also acts as a link to a more detailed forecast. As of the writing of this post I haven’t been able to access the more detailed weather information. But I do know it’s there because i have seen it earlier this month.

Appearance
All this information is presented in a slowly revolving display that shows depth. I think it’s cool! 3D is very underutilized on the Internet and especially in the widgetsphere.

Customizations
There are no options other than inputing your desired zip code. This is a Flash widget which opens up more placement options. Should be Mysapce friendly and I’ll tag and categorize it as such.

Opinion
Yes this is a cool widget with a 3d aspect. However, your readers really don’t care too much what the weather is like in your neighborhood (unless they live next door) I would at least like to see the ability to check my weather in my area without leaving the current page. Some weather animations might be a cool addition as well. Such as lightning, thunder, wind or even snow. (did i say snow?)
It’s still a decent start though. But I think in order to go mainstream, more unique features need to be incorporated into this widget.
